Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 347

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Safwan bin Assal (may Allah be pleased with him) that Zirr bin Hubaysh came to him. Safwan asked: "What has brought you to me this morning?" He said: "I have come seeking knowledge." Safwan said: "Listen! Whoever sets out, as you have, in search of knowledge, the angels lower their wings for him, pleased with what he does."
Abu Janab al-Kalbi narrated it as mawquf (a statement of the Companion), but he does not meet the conditions of this book; however, this does not weaken the hadith, because a group narrated it as marfu' (as a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)), and those who narrated it as marfu' are better at memorisation, and the addition they narrate is accepted.

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the printed edition this name has mistakenly become "Fudayl" (with dad), whereas the correct name is "Fasil" (with sad), as Imam al-Hakim, Imam al-Daraqutni and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi stated explicitly. According to al-Khatib al-Baghdadi it is read with a fathah on the fa' and a kasrah under the sad.

Grading: The hadith is "sahih" on the basis of other supporting reports, but this chain is "weak" because of the weakness of Abu Janab (Yahya bin Abi Hayyah al-Kalbi).
Grading: The narrator Yahya bin Fasil is "hasan al-hadith" (in sha' Allah).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): At least two thiqah narrators narrated from him, and Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned him in his book but reported no criticism of him; moreover, he is corroborated.
Reference / Source: Ibn al-A'rabi narrated it in "al-Mu'jam" (1402) and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (7349) via al-Hasan bin Ali bin Affan, and via al-Tabarani Abu Nu'aym transmitted it in "al-Hilyah" (5/ 22).
