مَا مِنْ رَجُلٍ يَخْرُجُ فِي طَلَبِ الْعِلْمِ إِلَّا بَسَطَتْ لَهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا رِضًى بِمَا يَفْعَلُ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ
No man goes out seeking knowledge but the angels spread their wings for him, pleased with what he does, until he returns

أخبرَناه أحمد بن سلمان الفقيه، حدثنا إسماعيل بن إسحاق والحسن بن علي المَعْمَري ومحمد بن عبد الله بن سليمان، قالوا: حدثنا شَيْبانُ، حدثنا الصَّعْق بن حَزْن، حدثنا علي بن الحَكَم، عن المِنهال بن عمرو، عن زِرِّ بن حُبيش، عن عبد الله بن مسعود قال: حدَّث صفوانُ بن عسَّال المُراديُّ قال: أتيتُ رسولَ الله ﷺ، فذكر الحديث (1). وقد أوقفَه أبو جَنَابٍ الكَلْبي عن طَلْحة بن مُصرّف عن زر بن حُبيش، وأبو جناب ممَّن لا يحتَجُّ بروايته في هذا الكتاب:

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Safwan bin Assal al-Muradi (may Allah be pleased with him) related: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); then he mentioned the like of the previous hadith.

(1) حديث صحيح، وهذا إسناد حسن، إلّا أنَّ المحفوظ فيه أنه من رواية زر بن حبيش عن صفوان بن عسال بلا واسطة.
Grading: The hadith is "sahih" and the chain is "hasan"; however, the preserved (mahfuz) view is that Zirr bin Hubaysh narrated it from Safwan bin Assal without any intermediary (directly).
وأخرجه الطبراني (7347)، وأبو نعيم في "معرفة الصحابة" (3818)، والضياء في "المختارة" 8/ (34) و (35) من طرق عن شيبان بن فروخ، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani (7347), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (3818) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (8/ 34, 35) transmitted it via various routes from Shayban bin Farrukh with this same chain.
