Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 298

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jubayr bin Mut'im (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood at the place of al-Khayf in Mina and said: "May Allah keep green and flourishing the servant who heard my words, remembered them, and then conveyed them to those who did not hear them; for many a bearer of knowledge is not himself a man of understanding, and many a bearer of knowledge carries it to those who have deeper understanding (fiqh) than they. There are three things with which the heart of a believer does not harbour rancour: making deeds purely for Allah, giving sincere counsel to those in authority, and holding fast to the community (jama'ah); for their supplication surrounds (and protects) them from behind."
All these trustworthy narrators agreed on narrating it from Muhammad bin Ishaq from al-Zuhri, except Abdullah bin Numayr alone, who differed by narrating it from Muhammad bin Ishaq from Abd al-Salam (Ibn Abi al-Janub) from al-Zuhri; and Ibn Numayr is also trustworthy. And Allah knows best.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the printed edition, and likewise in the sources that narrated it, the word is "takunu", while in the manuscripts it is "takunnu", which is also correct, meaning: it protects them and covers them.

Grading: This narration is "sahih li-ghayrihi", and its chain would be hasan were it not that Ibn Ishaq is a mudallis and did not state explicitly that he heard it from al-Zuhri; moreover, Abd Allah bin Numayr, in his narration from Ibn Ishaq, inserted a man between the two of them, as will come.

Note / Clarification: See also the one before it.

Grading: The narration of Ibn Numayr, which Ibn Majah (231, 3056) narrated from Muhammad bin Abd Allah bin Numayr, from his father, from Ibn Ishaq, from Abd al-Salam bin Abi al-Janub, from al-Zuhri, is very weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It contains Abd al-Salam bin Abi al-Janub, whose weakness is agreed upon; if Ibn Numayr preserved it correctly from Ibn Ishaq, then he (Ibn Ishaq) committed tadlis in it; and Allah Most High knows best. Al-Daraqutni said in "al-Ilal" (13/419): "The version of Ibn Numayr is closer to being correct," meaning with the addition of this Abd al-Salam.
Important point: Ibn Ishaq has another chain for it, as in the next hadith, and it is hasan.
