Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 304

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever travels a path to acquire knowledge, Allah will make easy for him the path to Paradise."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it! The wording which Za'idah narrated as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet) others have reported as mawquf (stopping at the Companion); as for the seeking of knowledge, there is no disagreement from al-A'mash in its chain.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Identification of names: Ibn Numayr refers to Abd Allah bin Numayr.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (vol. 12, 7427) and Imam Muslim (2699) narrated it via Abd Allah bin Numayr with this same chain.
Important point: The author (al-Hakim) including it (in al-Mustadrak) is an oversight on his part, since it is already in Sahih Muslim.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Apparently he means this part of the hadith: "Whoever is held back by his deeds (will not be advanced by his lineage)."
Important point: This phrase is marfu' according to the majority of al-A'mash's students, and the narrator Za'idah is not alone in narrating it as marfu'.
