It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Today a man asked me about something, and I did not know what answer to give him. He said: What do you think of a man who is well-equipped, energetic and eager for Jihad, but who says that our commanders impose things on us that we cannot count? I said: By Allah, I do not know what to tell you, except that we used to be with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and whatever he commanded, we would carry it out. The example of the world is like a pool whose clear water has been drunk and the muddy water left at the bottom. Any one of you will remain in good as long as he fears Allah, the Mighty and Majestic; and when some doubt arises in his heart, let him go to someone (a scholar) and ask him, and he will give him a healing (reassuring) answer. By Allah, soon you will not find such a (scholar).
This hadith is sahih on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Jarir is Jarir bin 'Abd al-Hamid, Abu Mu'awiyah is Muhammad bin Khazim al-Darir, and Shaqiq is Shaqiq bin Salamah Abu Wa'il.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Bukhari narrated it at (2964) through the route of 'Uthman bin Abi Shaybah, from Jarir bin 'Abd al-Hamid, from Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir, so Imam al-Hakim's including it as an addition (istidrak) to al-Bukhari is an "oversight" (dhuhul) on his part.
Important point: The portion of the hadith "What remains of this world is like a pool of muddy water whose clear part has been drunk and its murky part is left" will come later at number (8102) as marfu'.
Note / Clarification: "Al-mu'di" means a person fully equipped with weapons and the gear of war. (As in "al-Nihayah" of Ibn al-Athir.)
Note / Clarification: The word "al-thaghab" (with a fatha or a sukun on the ghayn) means a pool or reservoir of water in the shade of a mountain, where the sunlight does not reach, so that its water stays cool.
