Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 301

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) would say (on seeing students of hadith): "Welcome, in accordance with the instruction of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to instruct us regarding you."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) and established, because the two Shaykhs agreed on using Sa'id bin Sulayman, Abbad bin al-Awwam and al-Jurayri as evidence; then Imam Muslim used the hadith of Abu Nadrah as evidence. I have counted eleven core narrations (usul) in his "al-Musnad al-Sahih" through al-Jurayri, yet they did not record this hadith, which is the first hadith on the virtue of the students of hadith, and no hidden defect ('illah) is known in it. This hadith has several chains which the scholars of hadith compile through Abu Harun al-Abdi from Abu Sa'id, and Abu Harun is among those about whom the imams remained silent.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hafiz al-Busiri stated decisively, in his marginal note on al-Ala'i's book "al-Mukhtalitin" (16), that Abbad bin al-Awwam heard from al-Jurayri (Sa'id bin Iyas) before his memory deteriorated (ikhtilat).
Important point: What we wrote earlier in our commentary on "Sunan Ibn Majah" (247), that he heard from him after the deterioration, was haste on our part without evidence, so it should be corrected from here.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/540) and "al-Madkhal ila al-Sunan al-Kubra" (621) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with his two chains.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim in the introduction to "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (2/12), al-Ramahurmuzi in "al-Muhaddith al-Fasil" (21), Abu al-Shaykh in "Tabaqat al-Muhaddithin bi-Asbahan" (938), and Tammam in his "Fawa'id" (23) narrated it via two routes from Sa'id bin Sulayman al-Wasiti.
Reference / Source: Al-Ramahurmuzi (20) narrated something similar via Bishr bin Mu'adh al-Aqadi, from Abu Abd Allah (a neighbour of Hammad bin Zayd), from al-Jurayri.
Details of the narration: It has this addition: "We were commanded to make you memorise hadith and to make room for you in the gatherings."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This Abu Abd Allah is unknown (la yu'raf), and al-Dhahabi, in his entry on him in "Mizan al-I'tidal", after citing this hadith for him, said: "Very gharib."
Important point: What is preserved (mahfuz) from al-Jurayri is the abridged version: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to enjoin us regarding you."
Reference / Source: Al-Ramahurmuzi (23) also narrated via Yahya al-Himmani, from Ibn al-Ghasil, from Abu Khalid (the client of Ibn al-Sabbah al-Asadi), from Abu Sa'id, that when people came to him for knowledge he used to say: "Welcome to the bequest of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."
Grading: Its chain is weak because of the weakness of Yahya al-Himmani and the unknown status of Abu Khalid.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (247) and al-Tirmidhi (2650, 2651) narrated something similar via Abu Harun al-Abdi from Abu Sa'id, adding speech attributed as marfu' to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Harun (Umarah bin Juwayn) is matruk, and some called him a liar.
Important point: Imam Ahmad held, as in "al-Muntakhab min Ilal al-Khallal" (66), that what is preserved in this hadith is the hadith of Abu Harun al-Abdi, not the hadith of Abu Nadrah; and Allah Most High knows best.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Rather, they declared him very weak and spoke about him in harsh terms.
