Chapter
2 مِنْ سَعَادَةِ الْمَرْءِ أَنْ يَطُولَ عُمْرُهُ وَيَرْزُقَهُ اللَّهُ الْإِنَابَةَ .Part of a person's happiness is that his life is long and Allah grants him repentance
3 إِنَّ حُسْنَ الظَّنِّ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ عِبَادَةِ اللَّهِ .Thinking well of Allah is part of the worship of Allah
4 قَالَ اللَّهُ لَوْ لَقِيتَنِي بِقُرَابِ الْأَرْضِ خَطَايَا مَا لَمْ تُشْرِكْ بِي لَقِيتُكَ بِقُرَابِهَا مَغْفِرَةً .Allah said: If you meet Me with nearly an earthful of sins, without associating anything with Me, I will meet you with nearly as much forgiveness
5 دَوَاءُ الذُّنُوبِ أَنْ تَسْتَغْفِرَ اللَّهَ - عَزَّ وَجَلَّ - .The cure for sins is seeking forgiveness from Allah the Mighty and Majestic
6 اللَّهُ أَشَدُّ فَرَحًا بِتَوْبَةِ عَبْدِهِ مِنَ الرَّجُلِ بِرَاحِلَتِهِ .Allah rejoices more at the repentance of His servant than a man who finds his mount
7 النَّدَمُ تَوْبَةٌ .Remorse is repentance
8 مَنْ أَلَمَّ فَلْيَسْتَتِرْ بِسِتْرِ اللَّهِ .Whoever commits a sin, let him conceal himself with the cover of Allah
9 اسْتَقِمْ وَلْتُحَسِّنْ خُلُقَكَ .Be upright and improve your character
10 خَيْرُ الْخَطَّائِينَ التَّوَّابُونَ .The best of sinners are those who repent often
11 عِصْمَةُ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ - عَنْ عَمَلِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ قَبْلَ النُّبُوَّةِ .The protection of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from the deeds of Jahiliyyah before prophethood
12 لَوْ أَنَّكُمْ لَا تُخْطِئُونَ لَأَتَى اللَّهُ بِقَوْمٍ يُخْطِئُونَ يَغْفِرُ لَهُمْ .If you did not sin, Allah would bring a people who sin so that He may forgive them
13 مَنْ ذَكَرَ اللَّهَ فِي نَفْسِهِ ذَكَرَهُ اللَّهُ فِي نَفْسِهِ .Whoever remembers Allah within himself, Allah remembers him within Himself
14 كُلُّكُمْ يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ إِلَّا مَنْ شَرِدَ عَلَى اللَّهِ شِرَادَ الْبَعِيرِ عَلَى أَهْلِهِ .All of you will enter Paradise except one who runs away from Allah as a camel runs away from its owner
15 ذِكْرُ مِائَةِ رَحْمَةٍ لِلَّهِ وَتَقْسِيمِهَا .Mention of the hundred mercies of Allah and their distribution
16 ارْحَمْ مَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ يَرْحَمْكَ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاءِ .Show mercy to those on earth and the One above the heaven will show mercy to you
17 مَا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ مِنْ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا وَقَدْ خَلَقَ لَهُ مَا يَغْلِبُهُ .Allah has not created anything without creating something that overpowers it
18 مَنْ نُوقِشَ الْحِسَابَ هَلَكَ .Whoever is closely questioned in the reckoning is ruined
19 حِكَايَةُ عَابِدٍ عَبَدَ اللَّهَ خَمْسَمِائَةِ سَنَةٍ فَتُوُفِّيَ سَاجِدًا .The story of a worshipper who worshipped Allah for five hundred years and died in prostration
20 مَنْ قَالَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ وَوَجَبَتْ لَهُ الْجَنَّةُ .Whoever says la ilaha illallah enters Paradise and Paradise becomes due for him
21 الْكَيِّسُ مَنْ دَانَ نَفْسَهُ .The wise one is he who holds himself to account
22 يُؤْتَى بِحَسَنَاتِ الْعَبْدِ وَسَيِّئَاتِهِ فَيَقُصُّ بَعْضُهَا بِبَعْضٍ .The good and bad deeds of a servant will be brought and some will be settled against others
23 لَيَتَمَنَّيَنَّ أَقْوَامٌ لَوْ أَكْثَرُوا مِنَ السَّيِّئَاتِ .Some people will wish they had committed more sins
24 تُحْشَرُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةُ عَلَى ثَلَاثَةِ أَصْنَافٍ .This Ummah will be gathered in three categories
25 مَا عَلِمَ اللَّهُ مِنْ عَبْدٍ نَدَامَةً عَلَى ذَنْبٍ إِلَّا غَفَرَ لَهُ .Whenever Allah knows that a servant regrets a sin, He forgives him
26 عَذَابُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ فِي الْقَتْلِ وَالزَّلَازِلُ وَالْفِتَنُ .The punishment of this Ummah is in killing, earthquakes and trials
27 حِكَايَةُ وَرَعِ الْكِفْلِ .The story of the piety of al-Kifl
28 حِكَايَةُ ثَلَاثِ نَفَرٍ حَضَرُوا مَجْلِسَ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ - .The story of three men who attended the gathering of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
29 اسْتِغْفَارُ أَعْرَابِيٍّ لِلنَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ - .A Bedouin seeking forgiveness through the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
30 جَدِّدُوا إِيمَانَكُمْ بِقَوْلِ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ .Renew your faith by saying la ilaha illallah
31 إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ لِعَبْدِهِ مَا لَمْ يُغَرْغِرْ .Allah forgives His servant as long as the death rattle has not begun
32 مَنْ تَابَ إِلَى اللَّهِ قَبْلَ الْغَرْغَرَةِ تَابَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ .Whoever repents to Allah before the death rattle, Allah accepts his repentance
33 الصَّلَاةُ الْمَكْتُوبَةُ إِلَى الَّتِي بَعْدَهَا كَفَّارَةٌ لِمَا بَيْنَهُمَا .An obligatory prayer is an expiation for what is between it and the next
34 ذِكْرُ الْكَبَائِرِ التِّسْعِ .Mention of the nine major sins
35 لَا يَلِجُ النَّارَ أَحَدٌ بَكَى مِنْ خَشْيَةِ اللَّهِ .No one who wept out of fear of Allah will enter the Fire
36 فَضِيلَةُ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ .The virtue of remembering Allah
37 لِلْجَنَّةِ ثَمَانِيَةُ أَبْوَابٍ ، سَبْعَةٌ مُغْلَقَةٌ وَبَابٌ مَفْتُوحٌ لِلتَّوْبَةِ .Paradise has eight gates; seven are closed and one is open for repentance
38 من علم منكم أن الله ذو قدرة على مغفرة غفر لهWhoever among you knows that Allah has power to forgive is forgiven
39 ذِكْرُ فَضِيلَةِ الِاسْتِغْفَارِ .Mention of the virtue of seeking forgiveness
