Grading: Its chain is "weak" (da'if) because 'Ali bin Mas'adah is alone in narrating it, and he is not a strong narrator. His narration is accepted only when someone else corroborates him. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam Ibn 'Adi explicitly stated that the hadiths of 'Ali bin Mas'adah are not "mahfuz", and this hadith is among them. Ibn Qudamah al-Maqdisi quoted in (the tenth part of) "al-Muntakhab" (33) the statement of Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal that this hadith is "munkar". Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in (volume 20, hadith number 13049) in detail, Ibn Majah in (4251) and Imam al-Tirmidhi in (2499) by way of Zayd bin al-Hubab, with this same chain. Imam al-Tirmidhi says that this hadith is "gharib" and that we know it only through the chain of 'Ali bin Mas'adah from Qatadah.
