حدثني محمد بن صالح بن هانئ [حدثنا الفضل بن محمد الشَّعْراني وبشر بن سهل اللَّبّاد، قالا: حدثنا عبد الله بن صالح] (1) حدثنا حَرْملة بن عِمران التُّجِيبي، أنَّ أبا السِّمْط (2) سعيد بن أبي سعيد المَهْري حدّثه عن أبيه، عن عبد الله ابن عمرو: أنَّ معاذ بن جبل أراد سفرًا، فقال: يا رسولَ الله، أَوصِني، قال: "اعبُدِ اللهَ ولا تُشْرِكْ به شيئًا" قال: يا رسولَ الله، زِدْني، قال: "إذا أسأتَ فأحسِنْ" قال: يا رسولَ الله، زِدْني، قال: "استقِمْ ولتُحسِّنَ خُلُقَك" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to go on a journey and said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), advise me." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him." He said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), tell me more." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you commit an evil deed, then do a good deed (after it)." He said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), tell me more." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Remain steadfast and make your character excellent."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, and they (the two Shaykhs) did not record it.

Note / Clarification: The text between the square brackets was not present in the original manuscripts; we have added it on the basis of "Ithaf al-Maharah" (12129).

(2) تحرَّف في النسخ إلى: السوط، والمثبت من الرواية السالفة، ويقال في كنيته أيضًا: أبو السُّميط، وهي أشهر.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this word has mistakenly become "al-Sawt", whereas the correct form is the one established in the previous narration. The kunyah of this narrator is also given as "Abu al-Sumayt", and this is better known.
