حَدَّثَنَا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حَدَّثَنَا محمد بن عَوف (2) الطائي، حَدَّثَنَا أبو المغيرة، حَدَّثَنَا سعيد بن سِنان، حدثتني أمُّ الشَّعثاء، عن أمِّ عِصمة العَوْصيّة - وكانت قد أدركَتْ رسولَ الله ﷺ قالت: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "ما مِن مسلمٍ يعملُ ذنبًا إلَّا وَقَفَ الملَكُ الموكَّلُ بإحصاءِ ذنوبِه ثلاثَ ساعاتٍ، فإن استغفرَ الله من ذنبه ذلك في شيء من تلك الساعات، لم يُوقِفْه عليه، ولم يُعذَّبْ يومَ القيامة" (3).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Umm Ismah al-Awsiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) - who lived in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) - that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whenever a Muslim commits a sin, the angel appointed to record his sins waits for three hours. If he seeks Allah's forgiveness for that sin at any moment within those hours, the angel does not record it against him, and he will not be punished for it on the Day of Resurrection."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (B), this word has been distorted into "'araq".
(3) إسناده ضعيف جدًّا، سعيد بن سنان - وهو الشامي - متروك، وأم الشعثاء لا تعرف. أبو المغيرة: هو عبد القدوس بن الحجاج الخَولاني.
Grading: Its chain is "da'if jiddan" (extremely weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for its weakness is that the narrator Sa'id bin Sinan al-Shami is "matruk" (abandoned), while the female narrator named "Umm al-Sha'tha'" is also not known (unknown).
Note / Clarification: Abu al-Mughirah refers to 'Abd al-Quddus bin al-Hajjaj al-Khawlani.
وأخرجه الطبراني في "الأوسط" (17) - وعنه أبو نعيم في "معرفة الصحابة" (8003) - عن أحمد بن عبد الوهاب، وأبو الشيخ في "طبقات أصبهان" (964) - ومن طريقه الشجري في "أماليه" 1/ 200 - من طريق سلمة بن شبيب، كلاهما عن أبي المغيرة، بهذا الإسناد.

ويغني عنه حديث أبي أمامة رفعه: "إِنَّ صاحب الشمال ليرفع القلم ست ساعات عن العبد المسلم المخطئ أو المسيء، فإن ندم واستغفر الله منها ألقاها، وإلّا كُتبت واحدة". أخرجه الطبراني في "الكبير" (7765)، وفي "مسند الشاميين" (526) و (1228)، وأبو نعيم في "الحلية" 6/ 124، والبيهقي في "شعب الإيمان" (6650) من طريق إسماعيل بن عياش، عن عاصم بن رجاء، عن عروة بن رويم، والطبراني في "الكبير" (7787)، وفي "مسند الشاميين" (4681) من طريق الوليد بن مسلم، عن ثور بن يزيد، كلاهما (عروة بن رويم وثور) عن القاسم بن عبد الرحمن، عن أبي أمامة. وسندهما يشد أحدهما الآخَر فيتقوّى الحديث ويَحسُن بهما. وله طريقان آخران عن القاسم لا يُفرح بهما، لذلك أعرضنا عنهما.
Important point: In place of this weak narration, the marfu' hadith of Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) suffices, in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The angel on the left (who records sins) keeps the pen raised from the erring Muslim for six hours; if he regrets it and seeks forgiveness, the angel discards it, otherwise one sin is recorded."
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tabarani (al-Kabir 7765, Musnad al-Shamiyyin 526), Abu Nu'aym (al-Hilyah 6/ 124) and al-Bayhaqi (Shu'ab al-Iman 6650) with various chains.
Grading: The two routes of 'Urwah bin Ruwaym and Thawr bin Yazid strengthen each other, through which this hadith reaches the level of "hasan". The other two routes were disregarded because they are very weak.
قوله: "لم يوقفه عليه" قال الشوكاني في شرح "تحفة الذاكرين": بالقاف بعدها فاء؛ أي: لم يطلعه عليه، هكذا في غالب النسخ، ووقع في نسخة بالعين المهملة بعد القاف، من التوقيع، أي: لم يكتبه عليه، وهذا أقوم معنى، لأنَّ إيقاف العبد عليه ليس له كبير معنى هاهنا. قلنا: وقع في مطبوع "معرفة الصحابة": لم يرفعه عليه.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Allamah al-Shawkani says in his commentary on "Tuhfat al-Dhakirin" that "lam yuqifhu" (with fa' after the qaf) means "he did not inform him of it", and this is what is found in most copies. But in one copy it is "lam yuqi'hu" (with 'ayn), which means "he did not write it down", and this meaning appears to be more correct.
Note / Clarification: In the printed edition of "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah", the words at this place are "lam yarfa'hu 'alayhi".
