Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7869

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: 'Whoever among you knows that I have complete power to forgive sins, I forgive him, and I do not mind (the abundance of his sins), so long as he does not associate anything with Me.'"
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The chain is "da'if jiddan" (extremely weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The main reason for its weakness is Hafs bin 'Umar al-'Adani, whom Imam al-Dhahabi called "wahin" (extremely weak). Ibrahim bin al-Hakam bin Aban did corroborate him, but he himself is so weak that his corroboration gives no strength.
Important point: The text of this narration also contains "nakarah" (something strange and objectionable), which will be explained further on.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam al-Sarraj (Hadith 2607) and al-Lalaka'i (Usul al-I'tiqad 1990) through the route of Hafs bin 'Umar, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by 'Abd bin Humayd (602), al-Tabarani (al-Kabir 11615), al-Bayhaqi (al-Asma' wa al-Sifat 247) and al-Baghawi (Sharh al-Sunnah 4191) through the route of Ibrahim bin al-Hakam, from his father al-Hakam.
Important point: The text of this narration is likewise "munkar" (unfamiliar and strange), just as in the earlier hadith of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) with Imam al-Hakim (no. 7801).
Important point: The correct wording for this text is that which Imam Ahmad (35/ 21540) and others transmitted in this hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated by Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him): "Allah the Exalted says: O My servants, all of you are sinners except whom I grant well-being, so seek forgiveness from Me and I will forgive you; and whoever among you knows that I have the power to forgive, and asks Me for forgiveness by means of My power, I will forgive him and I do not mind."
General principle: This hadith establishes that forgiveness comes after the servant's istighfar (seeking forgiveness), not merely by knowing that Allah is the Forgiver.
