أخبرنا علي بن محمد بن عُقْبة الشَّيباني بالكوفة، حَدَّثَنَا الخَضِر بن أبان الهاشمي، حَدَّثَنَا معاوية بن هشام، حَدَّثَنَا سفيان، عن السُّدِّي، عن أبي الضُّحى، عن مسروق، عن عبد الله في قوله ﷿: ﴿لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ﴾ قال: يتوبون (3). هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم، ولم يُخرجاه. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "So that perhaps they will return" [Surah al-Sajdah: 21], that he said: (It means) that they repent.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

(3) خبر حسن، رجاله لا بأس بهم غير الخضر بن أبان الهاشمي، ففيه ضعف، وقد توبع. سفيان: هو الثَّوري، والسُّدي: هو إسماعيل بن عبد الرحمن بن أبي كريمة، وأبو الضحى: هو مسلم بن صبيح الهمداني. Grading: This is a report of "hasan" grade. Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is no problem with its narrators except al-Khidr bin Aban al-Hashimi, in whom there is some weakness, but he has been corroborated (mutaba'ah). Identification of the narrators: Sufyan is Sufyan al-Thawri, al-Suddi is Isma'il bin Abd al-Rahman, and Abu al-Duha is Muslim bin Subayh al-Hamdani. وأخرجه الطبري في "تفسيره" 21/ 50 و 111، وابن أبي حاتم في "تفسيره" 2/ 680، والطبراني في "الكبير" (9038) من طرق عن سفيان الثوري، بهذا الإسناد. Reference / Source: Al-Tabari (Tafsir 21/ 50 and 111), Ibn Abi Hatim (Tafsir 2/ 680) and al-Tabarani (al-Kabir 9038) narrated it via various routes from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this same chain.
