Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "weak" (da'if). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is that Shutayr bin Nahar (who is also called Sumayr) is alone in narrating it. Two narrators narrated from him, and although al-'Ijli declared him trustworthy and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", Imam al-Daraqutni and Imam al-Dhahabi declared him "majhul" (unknown). Moreover, he was contradicted regarding its wording. Important point: The established (mahfuz) wording from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is different from this, as will come. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 13/ (7956) and (8036), 15/ (9280) and 16/ (10364), Abu Dawud (4993) and Ibn Hibban (631) narrated it by various routes via Hammad bin Salamah, with this same chain. 16/ (10253). Reference / Source: This narration will come later by way of Sadaqah bin Musa, from Muhammad bin Wasi', at number (1/ 7849), where its takhrij will be given. Important point: The mahfuz narration from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is what al-A'raj narrated from him with these words: "Allah says: I am as My servant thinks of Me." Imam al-Bukhari (7505) narrated it. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was also narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) by Abu Salih al-Samman (in al-Bukhari (7405) and Muslim (2675) (1), (2) and (21)), by Yazid bin al-Asamm (in Muslim (2675) (19)) and by 'Abd al-Rahman Ibn Abi 'Amrah (in Ahmad 16/ (10253)).
