Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7795

أخبرني الحسن بن حَلِيم (1) المروَزي، أخبرنا أبو الموجِّه، أخبرنا عَبْدان، أخبرنا عبد الله، أخبرنا هشام بن الغاز، عن حَيَّان أبي النَّضر أنه حدّثه قال: سمعتُ واثلةَ بن الأسقع يقول: سمعتُ رسول الله ﷺ يقول: "قال الله ﵎: أنا عندَ ظَنِّ عبدي بي، فليَظُنَّ بي ما شاءَ" (2).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Allah Almighty said: I am as My servant thinks of Me, so let him think of Me whatever he wishes."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, and they (the two Shaykhs) did not record it.

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name was mistakenly written as "Hakim" (whereas the correct form is Hukaym).

(2) إسناده صحيح أبو الموجه: هو محمد بن عمرو الفزاري، وعبدان: هو عبد الله بن عثمان المروزي، وعبد الله: هو ابن المبارك.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Important point: Abu al-Muwajjih is Muhammad bin 'Amr al-Fazari, 'Abdan is 'Abd Allah bin 'Uthman al-Marwazi, and 'Abd Allah is Imam 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak.
وأخرجه أحمد 25/ (16017) و 28/ (16979)، وابن حبان (633) و (634) و (635) من طرق عن هشام بن الغاز، بهذا الإسناد. وفيه قصة.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in 25/ (16017) and 28/ (16979), and Imam Ibn Hibban in (633, 634, 635), by various routes from Hisham bin al-Ghaz, with this same chain, and it includes a story (qissah).
وأخرجه أحمد (16016) و (16017)، وابن حبان (641) من طرق عن حيان أبي النضر، به.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (16016, 16017) and Ibn Hibban (641) narrated it by routes from Hayyan Abu al-Nadr, with this same chain.
