مِنْ سَعَادَةِ الْمَرْءِ أَنْ يَطُولَ عُمْرُهُ وَيَرْزُقَهُ اللَّهُ الْإِنَابَةَ .

حدثنا علي بن حَمْشَاذَ العَدْل، حدثنا محمد بن إسماعيل السُّلمي، حدثنا إسحاق بن محمد الفَرْوي، حدثنا كَثير بن زيد، حدثنا الحارث بن أبي يزيد، قال: سمعتُ جابر بن عبد الله: [سمعت رسول الله ﷺ] (3) يقول: "إنَّ من سَعادةِ المرءِ أنْ يَطُولَ عُمُرُه ويرزقَه الله الإنابةَ" (4).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Part of a person's good fortune is that his life is long and Allah grants him the ability to turn back (in repentance) to Him."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, and they (the two Shaykhs) did not record it.

Note / Clarification: The text between the square brackets (al-ma'qufayn) we have taken from al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis", and it fully agrees with the sources of takhrij.
(4) حسن لغيره، وهذا إسناد محتمل للتحسين، إسحاق بن محمد الفروي ليِّن لكنه متابع، وكثير بن زيد ليس بذاك القوي لكن حديثه يحتمل التحسين، والحارث بن أبي يزيد - ويقال: ابن يزيد مولى الحكم - روى عنه اثنان وذكره ابن حبان في "ثقاته". وحسَّن إسناده الحافظ المنذري في "الترغيب" 4/ 257، وتبعه الهيثمي في "المجمع" 10/ 203.
Grading: This hadith is "hasan li-ghayrihi", and its chain can bear being graded hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although Ishaq bin Muhammad al-Farwi is a soft (layyin) narrator, he has corroboration. Kathir bin Zayd is not very strong, but his hadith can be taken at the level of hasan. Two narrators narrated from al-Harith bin Abi Yazid (the mawla of al-Hakam), and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat".
Reference / Source: Al-Hafiz al-Mundhiri graded its chain hasan in "al-Targhib" 4/ 257, and Imam al-Haythami followed him in "Majma' al-Zawa'id" 10/ 203.
وأخرجه أحمد 22/ (14564) عن أبي عامر عبد الملك بن عمرو العقدي وأبي أحمد محمد ابن عبد الله الزبيري، كلاهما عن كثير بن زيد، بهذا الإسناد. وزاد في أول الحديث: "لا تمنَّوا الموت" فإنَّ هول المطلع شديد … "، وانظر تتمة تخريجه وشواهده هناك.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 22/ (14564) narrated it from Abu 'Amir 'Abd al-Malik bin 'Amr al-'Aqadi and Abu Ahmad Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah al-Zubayri, both of them from Kathir bin Zayd, with this same chain.
Details of the narration: At its beginning these words are additional: "Do not wish for death, for the terror of the matla' (the first sight of the Hereafter) is severe." See its further takhrij and supporting reports there.
