It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Quraysh said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Pray to your Lord to turn (the mount of) Safa into gold for us, and we will believe in you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Will you do so?" They said: "Yes." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed. Then Jibril (peace be upon him) came to him and said: "Allah Almighty sends you greetings of peace and says: If you wish, Safa will become gold, but whoever disbelieves after that, I will punish him with a punishment with which I have not punished anyone among all the worlds; and if you wish, I will open for them the door of repentance and mercy." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, the door of repentance and mercy."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, and they (the two Shaykhs) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts, and likewise in "al-Musnad" itself, it is written this way ('Imran bin al-Hakam).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar says in "Ta'jil al-Manfa'ah" 2/ 81 that the correct name is "'Imran bin al-Harith Abu al-Hakam", as narrated in "Sahih Muslim" and elsewhere. We say: this hadith has passed earlier with the author (al-Hakim) at number (175), and there too "'Imran bin al-Hakam" is recorded.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Important point: Sufyan is Sufyan al-Thawri.
Reference / Source: This narration is in "Musnad Ahmad" 4/ (2166).
