It is narrated from Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we hunt game and we find no knife except a sharp-edged stone or a split piece of stick." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Make the blood flow (that is, slaughter it) with whatever you wish, and mention the name of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. The Book of Slaughtering (Kitab al-Dhaba'ih) is completed here, and now the Book of Repentance and Turning to Allah (Kitab al-Tawbah wa al-Inabah) begins.

(1) تحرَّف في النسخ إلى: الظراب، والمثبت من مصادر التخريج، وهو ما شرح عليه صاحب "النهاية"، فقال: الظِّرار: جمع ظُرَر، وهو حجر صُلْب محدَّد، ويجمع أيضًا على أظِرَّة. ويحتمل أن تكون الظّرَان بالنون، وهو جمعٌ آخر له. Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word has been distorted into "al-zirab", whereas the correct word is "al-zirar", as found in the sources of takhrij. Technical note / Defect ('illah): According to the author of "al-Nihayah" (Ibn al-Athir), "al-zirar" is the plural of "zurar", meaning a hard, sharp-edged stone. Its plural also comes as "azirrah", and there is also a possibility that it is "al-ziran" with a nun, which is another plural of it.
