Abd al-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Mas'ud narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, and we passed by a tree in which there were two chicks of a small bird (a hummarah), and we took them. The bird came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and began crying out, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who has distressed this (bird) over its chicks?" We said: "We did." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Put them (the chicks) back."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, and they (the two Shaykhs) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): We have discussed in detail the question of 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud hearing from his father ('Abd Allah bin Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him) under hadith number (278). Important point: Abu Mu'awiyah is Muhammad bin Khazim, and Abu Ishaq al-Shaybani is Sulayman bin Abi Sulayman. Reference / Source: Imam Abu Dawud (2675, 5268) narrated it by way of Abu Ishaq Ibrahim bin Muhammad al-Fazari, from Abu Ishaq al-Shaybani, from al-Hasan bin Sa'd, with this same chain, and after it he added another story. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in 6/ (3835, 3836) by way of 'Abd al-Wahid bin 'Abd Allah bin 'Utbah al-Mas'udi, via al-Hasan bin Sa'd. In the second narration, al-Qasim bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud is mentioned together with al-Hasan bin Sa'd as a corroborating narrator. Note / Clarification: "Al-hummarah" is a small bird like a sparrow; its "mim" may be read both with a shaddah (hummarah) and without it (humarah).
