Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7830

Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abi Talhah al-Ansari narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever says 'La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah)' enters Paradise - or Paradise becomes obligatory for him - and whoever says 'Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi (Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him)' one hundred times, Allah Almighty writes for him one hundred and twenty-four thousand good deeds." The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then none of us will be ruined! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed he will. (Listen!) One of you will come with so many good deeds that, if they were placed on a mountain, they would weigh it down; then Allah's blessings will come and take those good deeds away (that is, be set against them); then, after that, the Lord will favour him with His mercy."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration and is a supporting witness (shahid) for the hadith of Sulayman bin Harim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts it is written "Ahmad bin Suraij", whereas the correct name is given in "Ithaf al-Maharah" (4907).

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts the name was corrupted to "Muhammad", whereas in "Ithaf al-Maharah" it is given correctly.

Note / Clarification: The text between the brackets [ ] is taken from al-Mundhiri's "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib"; he quoted al-Hakim's narration with its exact text, and it was not in the manuscripts, while in manuscript (M) a blank space has been left in place of part of the phrase "wa bi-hamdihi".

Note / Clarification: The source of this addition is al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis".

Grading: Its chain is "da'if".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Only two people narrated from the narrator Yahya bin Shu'bah bin Yazid; Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" (9/ 253), but there the name "Shu'bah" has been corrupted to "Sa'id". There, only Umar bin Yunus al-Yamami is mentioned among his students, but in al-Tabarani's al-Kabir (4726) another student is also mentioned; hence this narrator is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown condition).
Important point: We did not find this narration as a hadith of Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) with anyone other than the author (al-Hakim).
Details of the narration: However, its first part (which concerns the one who says "La ilaha illa Allah") is found elsewhere, and it applies to the person who died upon tawhid (monotheism) and did not commit shirk.
Reference / Source: In this regard see the earlier hadith of Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), no. (1315); also, our detailed discussion of the hadiths of this chapter is in our notes on Sunan Abi Dawud, no. (3116).
Important point: Analysis of the second part of the narration.
Details of the narration: Its second part is narrated via Ayyub bin Utbah, from Ata bin Abi Rabah, from Ibn Umar, in these sources: Ibn Hibban (al-Majruhin 1/ 169-170), Ibn al-Jawzi (al-Mawdu'at 862), al-Tabarani (al-Mu'jam al-Kabir 13595, al-Awsat 1581, al-Du'a 1694), Abu Nu'aym (al-Hilyah 3/319, Ma'rifat al-Sahabah 921) and Ibn al-Jawzi (al-Mawdu'at 1196).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In Ibn Hibban's version the name Ibn Abbas appears in place of Ibn Umar. Ayyub bin Utbah al-Yamami is a da'if narrator and "fahish al-khata'" (one who makes gross errors).
Grading: Ibn Hibban, going to an extreme, declared it "false and without any basis".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This narration has another route: al-Nadr bin Ubayd, from al-Hasan bin Dhakwan, from Ata, which is narrated by Ibn Adi (5/ 85) and al-Tabarani (13597).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar supposed in "Lisan al-Mizan" that al-Nadr bin Ubayd is actually al-Nadr bin Abd Allah al-Azdi; but we say that both of them are "majhul" (unknown).
