Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7854

Abd al-Rahman bin al-Baylamani says: I heard a man from among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever repents to Allah even one day before he dies, Allah will accept his repentance." He said: Then I mentioned this to another Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he asked: Did you hear this yourself? I said: Yes. He said: I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever repents half a day before he dies, Allah will accept his repentance." The narrator says: Then I mentioned this to yet another Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he asked: Did you hear this? I said: Yes. He said: I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever repents a forenoon's span (dahwah) before he dies, Allah will accept his repentance." The narrator says: Then I mentioned this to yet another Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he asked: Did you hear this? I said: Yes. He said: I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever repents before the gurgling (the death rattle) begins, Allah will accept his repentance."

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: This addition is taken from "Shu'ab al-Iman", where he (al-Bayhaqi) narrated it from the author (al-Hakim).

Grading: Its chain is da'if.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for its weakness is the weakness of Abd al-Rahman bin al-Baylamani. Salih Jazarah says that his hearing from any Companion is not established except from "Surraq". Also, Hisham bin Sa'd al-Madani is not very strong, though he has been corroborated.
Important point: The acceptance of repentance before the soul reaches the throat (ghargharah) is authentically established by the earlier hadith of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (6666) via Abu Zakariyya bin Abi Ishaq, from Muhammad bin Ya'qub al-Shaybani, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (38/ 23068) narrated it via Asbat bin Muhammad, from Hisham bin Sa'd, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (24/ 15499) and Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Tawbah" (150) narrated it via Muhammad bin Mutarrif, while Abu Nu'aym transmitted it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (7247) via Abd Allah bin Ja'far bin Najih; both of these narrators narrate it from Zayd bin Aslam in a similar way.
