حَدَّثَنَا أبو العباس أحمد بن هارون الفقيه إملاءً، حَدَّثَنَا بِشر بن موسى ابن شَيْخ بن عَمِيرة الأَسَدي، حَدَّثَنَا عبد الله بن صالح بن مسلم العِجْلي، حَدَّثَنَا عبد الرحمن بن ثابت بن ثَوْبان، عن أبيه، عن مكحول، عن عمر بن نُعَيم، عن أسامة بن سلمان، أنَّ أبا ذَرٍّ الغِفاري حدَّثهم، أنَّ رسولَ الله ﷺ قال: "إِنَّ الله يَغْفِرُ لعبدِه ما لم يَقَعِ الحِجابُ"، قيل: يا رسولَ الله، وما الحِجابُ؟ قال: "أن تموتَ النفسُ مشركةً" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty forgives His servant as long as the 'barrier' has not come about." It was said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what is the barrier? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That a person dies while he is a polytheist."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is da'if.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Two of its narrators, Umar bin Nu'aym and Usamah bin Salman, are "majhul" (unknown).
وأخرجه أحمد (35/ 21523) و (21524)، وابن حبان (627) من طرق عن عبد الرحمن بن ثابت بن ثوبان، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (35/ 21523) and (21524) and Ibn Hibban (627) narrated it via various routes from Abd al-Rahman bin Thabit bin Thawban, with this same chain.
وأخرجه أحمد (21522) عن أبي داود الطيالسي، عن عبد الرحمن بن ثابت به. لكن لم يذكر في إسناده أسامة بن سلمان.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (21522) narrated it via Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, from Abd al-Rahman bin Thabit, but Usamah bin Salman is not mentioned in its chain.
وأخرجه ابن حبان (626) من طريق الوليد بن مسلم، عن ابن ثوبان، به. وليس فيه عمر بن نعيم.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (626) narrated it via al-Walid bin Muslim, from Ibn Thawban, and Umar bin Nu'aym is not mentioned in this narration.
