Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7816

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: O son of Adam, if you draw near to Me by a hand-span, I will draw near to you by a cubit; and if you draw near to Me by a cubit, I will draw near to you by an arm's length (ba'). O son of Adam, if you intend a good deed in your heart but do not do it, I will record it for you as one good deed; and if you do it, I will record it for you as ten; and if you intend an evil deed and awe of Me holds you back from it, I will record that too as a good deed for you; but if you commit it, I will record it as only one evil deed."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, and they (the two Shaykhs) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) This narration, from the hadith of Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), is "shadh" with this wording that mentions "talking to oneself (tahdith al-nafs)". Although its narrators are thiqah, Ibrahim bin Tahman is alone in narrating it from Mansur (bin al-Mu'tamir), and Ibrahim has some things in which he is not corroborated and is alone, as al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi indicated in "al-Siyar" (7/ 383).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Yet this same hadith was also narrated from al-Ma'rur bin Suwayd by Imam al-A'mash and 'Asim bin Bahdalah, but their narration does not contain the story of "talking to oneself", as passed earlier with the author (al-Hakim) at number (7797), and that (without these words) is what is "mahfuz" in the hadith of Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him). And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: As for this hadith of Ibn Tahman, al-Bazzar (3990) narrated it from Ahmad bin al-Mu'alla al-Adami, from Muhammad bin Muhabbab, with this same chain, but al-Bazzar did not quote its wording.
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (3989) also narrated it by way of Muhammad bin Muhabbab, and Abu Bakr al-Najjad in his "Amali" (3) by way of Abu Hudhayfah al-Nahdi; both of them (Muhammad and Abu Hudhayfah) narrate it from Ibn Tahman, from Mansur, from Lahiq bin Humayd, from al-Ma'rur bin Suwayd (with this same chain). Al-Bazzar did not quote its wording, while al-Najjad gave the wording similar to the narration of the author (al-Hakim).
Details of the narration: Imam Ahmad (21374) likewise narrated its first part by way of Yazid bin Nu'aym, from Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him).
Important point: As for the topic of "talking to oneself" (having the thought) about a good deed or a bad deed, the authentic hadith on it is that of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), which he narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who narrates from his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, that He said: "… Whoever intends a good deed but does not do it, Allah writes it down with Himself as one complete good deed; and if he intends it and does it, Allah writes it down with Himself as ten good deeds, up to seven hundred times, up to many multiples. And whoever intends a bad deed but does not do it, Allah writes it down with Himself as one complete good deed; and if he intends it and does it, Allah writes it down as one bad deed."
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari (6491) and Imam Muslim (131) narrated it.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A similar narration is found from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari (7501) and Muslim (129), and from the hadith of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) in Muslim (162).
