Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7817

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever remembers Allah Almighty within himself, Allah remembers him within Himself; and whoever remembers Allah in a gathering, Allah remembers him in a gathering that is more numerous and purer than the gathering in which he remembered Him. And whoever draws near to Allah by a hand-span, Allah draws near to him by a cubit; and whoever draws near to Allah by a cubit, Allah draws near to him by an arm's length; and whoever comes to Allah walking, Allah comes to him running; and whoever comes to Allah running, Allah comes to him (with His mercy) swiftly."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it with this wording.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is sahih, and the narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy),
Technical note / Defect ('illah): but the narration of Jarir (i.e. Ibn Abd al-Hamid) from Ata bin al-Sa'ib is from after his ikhtilat (the deterioration of his memory), and Hammad bin Salamah contradicted him, narrating it from Ata, from al-Agharr Abu Muslim, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and that (Hammad's narration) is the correct one; this hadith is also established from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) through other routes, as will come later.
Reference / Source: Ishaq bin Rahawayh narrated it in his "Musnad" (233) from Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (15/9254) narrated it from Affan bin Muslim, and Ibn Hibban (328) at length via Hudbah bin Khalid; both of them (Affan and Hudbah) narrate it from Hammad bin Salamah, from Ata bin al-Sa'ib, from al-Agharr Abu Muslim, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ahmad (13/8650) narrated it from Hasan bin Musa al-Ashyab, from Hammad, with the same chain, but he named al-Agharr "Salman", which is a "wahm" (error). See our note on hadith no. (7382) in "Musnad Ahmad".
Reference / Source: It was narrated in full and in abridged form by Ahmad (12/7422, 15/9351, 16/10224), al-Bukhari (7405), Muslim (2675/ 1, 2, 21), Ibn Majah (3822), al-Tirmidhi (3603), al-Nasa'i (7683) and Ibn Hibban (811, 812) via Abu Salih al-Samman; by Ahmad (15/9617, 16/10619), al-Bukhari (7537), Muslim (2686/ 20) and Ibn Hibban (376) via Anas bin Malik; by Ahmad (13/8193) and Muslim (2675/ 3) via Hammam bin Munabbih; by Ahmad (13/8650) via al-Hasan al-Basri; and (16/10253) via Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Amrah; and (16/10498) via Musa bin Yasar al-Madani; and by Ibn Hibban (810) via Abu Hazim Salman al-Ashja'i; all seven of these narrate it from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is hasan sahih.
