Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi", but this particular chain is "munqati'" (broken), because Abu Ubaydah (bin Abd Allah bin Mas'ud) did not hear from his father (Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is also disagreement on the narrator Abu Ishaq (Amr bin Abd Allah al-Sabi'i) as to whether this narration is marfu' (a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) or mawquf (a saying of a Companion), and the same disagreement is found among the students who narrated it from him.
Details of the narration: From Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj, Abd al-Malik bin Ibrahim narrated it as "marfu'", in the narration of Ali bin al-Husayn al-Hilali, as found with the author (al-Hakim).
Details of the narration: Mazdad bin Jamil narrated it from Abd al-Malik bin Ibrahim (
Reference / Source: al-Lalaka'i, Sharh Usul I'tiqad Ahl al-Sunnah, no. 657), but he made it a mawquf saying of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: From Shu'bah, Yahya bin al-Sakan al-Basri narrated it as marfu' (
Reference / Source: al-Tabarani, al-Awsat 1384; al-Daraqutni in al-Ilal 5/ 300; al-Lalaka'i 655).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tabarani says that no one narrated it from Shu'bah except Yahya; but in fact Yahya bin al-Sakan al-Basri is himself a "da'if" (weak) narrator.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-A'mash (Sulayman bin Mihran) narrated it from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, and among al-A'mash's students too there was disagreement as to whether it is marfu' or mawquf.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: From al-A'mash, Hafs bin Ghiyath narrated it as "marfu'" (
Reference / Source: al-Tabarani, al-Awsat 3031, al-Saghir 281; al-Daraqutni, al-Ilal 5/ 300; Abu Nu'aym, "Tarikh Asbahan" 1/ 219). According to al-Tabarani, Hafs is alone in transmitting it from al-A'mash.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hafs bin Ghiyath was contradicted by a group of narrators who narrated it from al-A'mash as "mawquf".
Details of the narration: These narrators include Abu Mu'awiyah Muhammad bin Khazim al-Darir (
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah 8/ 528; Ahmad, al-Zuhd 875), Abu Shihab al-Hannat and al-Fudayl bin Iyad (
Reference / Source: al-Daraqutni, al-Ilal 5/ 298).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A large group narrated it from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i as "marfu'", among them: Abu al-Ahwas Sallam bin Sulaym (
Reference / Source: al-Tayalisi 333; al-Darimi, "al-Radd ala al-Jahmiyyah" 74; Musnad Abi Ya'la 5063; Hilyat al-Awliya' 4/ 210), Abu Ayyub al-Ifriqi Abd Allah bin Ali al-Azraq (

Reference / Source: al-Tabarani, al-Awsat 3721).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The above group was contradicted by Isra'il bin Yunus al-Sabi'i and al-Jarrah bin Malih; both of them narrated it from Abu Ishaq as "mawquf" (
Reference / Source: Zuhd Waki' 499; Zuhd Hannad 1323).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Zakariyya bin Abi Za'idah contradicted all of them and gave its chain thus: "Abu Ishaq, from Abu al-Ahwas Awf bin Malik, from Ibn Mas'ud".
Important point: Al-Daraqutni (
Reference / Source: al-Ilal 5/ 299) took the position that the "mawquf" version of this narration is the more correct.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This narration is supported by the hadith of Abd Allah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) (
Reference / Source: no. 7461).
