Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7846

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Aswad bin Sari' (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Bedouin captive was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: I repent to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and I do not repent to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He has recognised the right as belonging to its rightful owner."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is da'if.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator Muhammad bin Mus'ab al-Qarqasani is "layyin al-hadith" (of weak memory), and al-Dhahabi in "al-Talkhis" criticised it on this very basis. Also, whether al-Hasan al-Basri heard from al-Aswad bin Sari' is disputed, as has been detailed under hadith no. 2598.
Reference / Source: Ahmad bin Hanbal (24/ 15587) narrated it via Muhammad bin Mus'ab, with this same chain.
