Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7843

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: I heard a hadith from the blessed mouth of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); had I heard it only once or twice - until he counted up to seven times - (I might not have narrated it), but I heard it far more often than that. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Among the Children of Israel there was a man called Kifl who would not refrain from any sin. A woman came to him, and he gave her sixty dinars (for fornication). When he sat with her the way a husband sits with his wife, the woman began to tremble and weep. He asked: Why are you weeping? Have I forced you? She said: No, but this is something I have never done; only my need and hardship have driven me to it. He said: You have never done this, and now (out of hardship) you are doing it? The narrator says: Then he moved away from her and said: Go, and these dinars are yours too. Then he said: By Allah, Kifl will never again disobey his Lord. That very night he died, and in the morning it was found written on his door: 'Indeed, Allah has forgiven Kifl.'"
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The chain is da'if.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): No one narrated from the narrator "Sa'd the freed slave of Talhah" except Abu Ja'far al-Razi. According to Abu Hatim, this man is known only through this one hadith (the hadith of al-Kifl). Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", while Ibn Kathir declared it "extremely gharib" (gharib jiddan).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (8/ 4747) and al-Tirmidhi (2496) narrated it via Asbat bin Muhammad, from al-A'mash, with this same chain.
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi called it a "hasan hadith".
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (387) narrated it via Abu Bakr bin Ayyash, from al-A'mash, from Abd Allah bin Abd Allah al-Razi, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Abd Allah bin Umar.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the narration of this chain Abu Bakr bin Ayyash made an error, and, as al-Tirmidhi said, this hadith is "ghayr mahfuz" (not preserved) from Sa'id bin Jubayr.
