Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7844

It is narrated from Ibn Abi Mulaykah concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "And she certainly desired him, and he desired her" [Surah Yusuf: 24], that (he) sat with that woman the way a husband sits with his wife, and he was called out to from the unseen: O son of Ya'qub, will you commit fornication and then become like a bird whose feathers have been plucked out, which wants to fly but has no feathers?!
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is da'if.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for its weakness is Muhammad bin Isa bin Hayyan al-Mada'ini. The other narrators of the chain include Uthman bin Abi Sulayman al-Nawfali al-Makki and Ibn Abi Mulaykah (whose full name is Abd Allah bin Ubayd Allah).
Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq (Tafsir 1/ 321), Sa'id bin Mansur (Sunan/Tafsir 1116), al-Tabari (Tafsir 2/ 185 and 12/ 186), Ibn Abi Hatim (Tafsir 7/ 2122) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi (al-Mukhtarah 11/ 114) narrated it via Sufyan bin Uyaynah, from Uthman bin Abi Sulayman, from Ibn Abi Mulaykah.
Important point: All these imams made it Ibn Abbas's (may Allah be pleased with him) own saying (mawquf).
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari (12/ 186) narrated it via Ibn Jurayj, and al-Tabari and Abu Nu'aym (al-Hilyah 1/ 323) via Nafi' bin Umar, and Ibn Abi Hatim (7/ 2123) via Zuhayr bin Muhammad; all three transmit it from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), as mawquf.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narration of Zuhayr bin Muhammad contains some additions, and the narrations of the people of Syria from him are not strong, and this narration is one of them.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari (12/ 186) narrated it via Talhah bin Amr al-Hadrami, from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, with the words "balaghani" (it reached me).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrator Talhah bin Amr is da'if, or rather "matruk" (one whose hadith is abandoned).
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari (12/ 186) also transmitted it via Ibn Jurayj, from Ibn Abi Mulaykah (as his own saying).
Grading: This chain is da'if, and the correct route from Ibn Jurayj is the one that has already passed.
Important point: This saying is "munkar and strange", and the most likely view is that it is taken from the Isra'iliyyat (reports from the People of the Book).
Note / Clarification: Imam Abu Hayyan al-Andalusi, in his tafsir "al-Bahr al-Muhit" (5/ 294-295), has an excellent discussion refuting the attribution of this shameful act to Prophet Yusuf (peace be upon him); it will be beneficial to study it.
