It is narrated from Abu Burdah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was with Ubaydullah bin Ziyad when the heads of the Khawarij were brought there. Whenever a head was carried past him, he would say: This one goes to the Fire. So Abdullah bin Yazid said to him: Do you not know that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The punishment of this Ummah has been placed in its own hands, in this very world of it."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. However, Imam Muslim alone recorded the hadith of Talhah bin Yahya from Abu Burdah from Abu Musa: "My Ummah is an Ummah that has been shown mercy."

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Like the previous narration, this hadith too is "mudtarib" (inconsistent). Note / Clarification: Abu Hasin is Uthman bin Asim bin Husayn al-Asadi.
Reference / Source: Abd bin Humayd (537) narrated it from Ubayd Allah bin Musa, from Talhah bin Yahya, from Abu Burdah, from his father Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) as marfu': "This Ummah is an Ummah shown mercy; its punishment is at its own hands. When the Day of Resurrection comes, each man of them will be given a man from the people of the dhimmah (or from the people of shirk), and it will be said: This is your ransom from the Fire". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muslim narrated only its second part (about the ransom) at no. 2767, not the first part, but al-Hakim was under the impression that Muslim had narrated it in full. Further details of this will come later at no. 8577.
