It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever repents a year before his death, his repentance will be accepted," until he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "a month before," until he said: "a week before," until he said: "a day before," until he said: "an hour before," until he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "as long before as the interval between two milkings of a she-camel (that is, a brief moment, his repentance will be accepted)." The narrator says: I said: Subhanallah! Has Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, not said: "And repentance is not (accepted) for those who keep doing evil deeds until, when death comes to one of them, he says: Now I repent" [Surah al-Nisa: 18]? Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I am only narrating to you what I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The chain is da'if; discussion of it has passed under no. 7854. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd Allah bin Nafi', narrating from Hisham bin Sa'd, named the Companion as "Abd Allah bin Amr", whereas all the other narrators who narrated it from Hisham, and likewise those who corroborated Hisham from Zayd bin Aslam, left the Companion unnamed (mubham), as has passed in the previous three hadiths. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd Allah bin Nafi' also contradicted the other narrators in the text; he narrated it from only one Companion, whereas the other narrators attribute it to several Companions. Reference / Source: Ahmad (11/ 6920) narrated via a man from Banu al-Harith, who said: I heard a man from among us called Ayyub say: I heard Abd Allah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), attributing it to the Prophet (marfu'): "Whoever repents a year before his death, his repentance is accepted; whoever repents a month before his death, his repentance is accepted", until he said: "a day", until he said: "an hour", until he said: "a fuwaq" (the interval between two milkings of a she-camel). Grading: Its chain is da'if because the Harithi man in it is "mubham" (unnamed) and his shaykh Ayyub is "majhul" (unknown). Note / Clarification: The word "fuwaq" (with damma or fatha on the fa') refers to the short interval between two milkings of a she-camel, in which the camel is rested so that the milk comes down into the udders again. This explanation was given by Ibn al-Athir in "al-Nihayah".
