Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih, and there is no harm in the narrators of this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): A large group narrated from the narrator Ziyad bin Abi Maryam, and Imam al-'Ijli, Ibn Hibban and al-Daraqutni declared him "thiqah", so his narration is at the very least not below the level of "hasan". However, there is a difference on 'Abd al-Karim al-Jazari regarding this chain; one group (which includes Sufyan al-Thawri and Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah) narrates it from Ziyad bin Abi Maryam, as in this present narration.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Another group contradicted the first group and narrated it from Ziyad bin al-Jarrah. This scholarly difference was set out in detail by Imam Ibn Abi Hatim in "al-'Ilal" (hadith numbers 1797 and 1816) and "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (volume 3, pages 527-528), Imam al-Daraqutni in "al-'Ilal" (813), Imam al-Mizzi in "Tahdhib al-Kamal" (volume 9, pages 511-514) and Ibn Hajar in "Tahdhib al-Tahdhib" (volume 3, pages 384-385). Yahya bin Ma'in ("Tarikh al-Duri": 5366), 'Ali bin al-Madini ("Mudih Awham al-Jam'": volume 1, page 256), Ibn Abi Hatim and Ibn Hajar considered him to be "Ziyad bin al-Jarrah".
Important point: We say: whether the narrator is Ziyad bin Abi Maryam or Ziyad bin al-Jarrah, both are thiqah or saduq, so the authenticity of the hadith is not affected. For further detail, see our tahqiq of "Musnad Ahmad".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad reported it in (volume 6, hadith number 3568) and Ibn Majah in (hadith number 4252) via Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in (hadith number 4124) via Sufyan al-Thawri, from 'Abd al-Karim al-Jazari.
Details of the narration: Imam Ahmad reported it in (hadith number 4012) via Furat bin Salman al-Jazari, from 'Abd al-Karim al-Jazari, from Ziyad bin al-Jarrah, from 'Abd Allah bin Ma'qil; in it the narrator's name is given as "Ziyad bin al-Jarrah", and Furat was corroborated by other narrators who are mentioned in "Musnad Ahmad".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in (hadith numbers 4014 and 4016) via Khusayf bin 'Abd al-Rahman, from Ziyad bin Abi Maryam.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam Ibn Hibban narrated it in (hadith numbers 612 and 614) with the chain Malik bin Mighwal, from Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir, from Khaythamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman, from 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud, but this chain is "munqati'" (broken), because Khaythamah did not hear from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
