Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7800

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "A servant committed a sin and said: 'O my Lord, I have committed a sin, so forgive me.' His Lord said: 'My servant knows that he has a Lord who forgives sin and also takes to account for it.' So Allah forgave him. Then he refrained (from sins) for as long as Allah willed, then he committed another sin and said: 'O my Lord, I have committed a sin, so forgive me.' His Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, said: 'My servant knows that he has a Lord who forgives sin and also takes to account for it. I have forgiven My servant, so let him do what he wishes.' Then he sinned a third time and said: 'Lord, forgive me my sin.' Allah, Glorified and Exalted, said: 'My servant committed a sin and he knows that he has a Lord who forgives sin and also takes to account for sin. (O servant,) do what you wish, I have forgiven you.'"
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Important point: Ibrahim bin 'Abd Allah is "Ibrahim bin 'Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Sa'di".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 13/ (7948) and Imam Ibn Hibban (622) narrated it by way of Yazid bin Harun, with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): With these two scholars (Ahmad and Ibn Hibban), the words "fa-l-ya'mal ma sha'a" (so let him do what he wills) are not present the second time, and the same is the case in the remaining routes.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 15/ (9256) and 16/ (10380), Imam al-Bukhari (7507) and Imam Muslim (2758) (30) narrated it by various routes from Hammam bin Yahya.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Hakim's inclusion of it as a supplement (istidrak) is an "oversight" (dhuhul) on his part (because it already exists in both al-Bukhari and Muslim).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 16/ (10379), Imam Muslim (2758) (29), Imam al-Nasa'i (10180) and Imam Ibn Hibban (625) narrated it by various routes from Hammad bin Salamah, via Ishaq bin 'Abd Allah.
Important point: Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) says in "Sharh Muslim" that if a sin is repeated a hundred times, a thousand times or even more, and the person repents (sincerely) each time, his repentance will be accepted and his sins will be wiped away. Likewise, if after all of these sins he repents from all of them with a single repentance, his repentance is still valid.
Note / Clarification: The statement of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, about the one who repeatedly sinned, "Do what you will, for I have forgiven you", means: as long as you keep sinning and then repenting, I will keep forgiving you.
