Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7833

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) related from al-Ruh al-Amin (the Trustworthy Spirit, Jibril, peace be upon him) that the Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, said: "A servant's good deeds and bad deeds will be brought, and they will be settled (evened out) against one another; then, if even a single good deed remains, Allah will make room for him in Paradise." The narrator says: Then I went to Yazdad, and he also narrated the hadith in the same way. I asked him: What if the good deeds are used up (that is, the bad deeds equal them)? He said: Recite this verse: "Those are the ones from whom We accept the best of what they did and overlook their misdeeds, (they will be) among the companions of Paradise; a true promise which they had been promised." [Surah al-Ahqaf: 16] I asked him: What is your view of this saying of Allah Almighty: "No soul knows what joy for the eyes has been kept hidden for them as a reward for what they used to do" [Surah al-Sajdah: 17]? He said: The deed a servant does in secret, of which people have no knowledge, its reward is upon Allah, the Mighty and Majestic; so on the Day of Resurrection Allah too will reveal for him a joy for the eyes that has been kept hidden (until then).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration through the Yemeni narrators, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscript (M) the word is written "Azdad" (with an alif), and before it a blank space (bayad) the length of one word has been left.

Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) the word "fa-la" is recorded.

Grading: The chain is da'if.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): No one narrated from the narrator "al-Ghitrif" (Abu Harun al-Yamani) except al-Hakam bin Aban, and no reliable hadith scholar declared him trustworthy; therefore he is "majhul". The narrator "al-Mu'tamir" is Mu'tamir bin Sulayman bin Tarkhan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator "Yazdad" (whom al-Hakam bin Aban asked) is also called "Azdad". He is "Ibn Fasa'ah al-Farisi al-Yamani". Abu Hatim declared him "majhul", while al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar wrote in "al-Taqrib" that there is disagreement about his being a Companion.
Reference / Source: This narration was transmitted, in full and in abridged form, by al-Bukhari (al-Tarikh al-Kabir 7/ 113), Ibn Abi al-Dunya (al-Tawbah 153), al-Bazzar (Musnad 5272), al-Tabarani (Tafsir 21/ 105-106 and 26/ 18), al-Dulabi (al-Kuna 1978), Ibn Abi Hatim (Tafsir, as in Tafsir Ibn Kathir 7/ 265-266), al-Tabarani (al-Kabir 12832), Abu Nu'aym (al-Hilyah 3/ 91) and al-Bayhaqi (Shu'ab al-Iman 6515, 6516), via various routes from Mu'tamir bin Sulayman, with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Some made it the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), some the words of Jibril (peace be upon him), and some the words of Allah the Exalted (a hadith qudsi). Al-Bazzar says that these words are narrated only from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), and there is no other chain from him besides this one route; moreover, al-Ghitrif has no other musnad narration from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) besides this, and no one narrated from al-Ghitrif except al-Hakam bin Aban, and al-Hakam is "laysa bihi ba's" (an acceptable) narrator.
Reference / Source: Abd bin Humayd (Musnad 661) narrated it via Ibrahim bin al-Hakam, and Ibn Abi Dawud (al-Ba'th 30) and al-Dhahabi (Siyar A'lam al-Nubala' 12/ 340) via Yazid bin Abi Hakim, from al-Hakam bin Aban, in abridged form.
