Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7798

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated from Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, that Allah Almighty said: "O My servants, you commit sins by night and by day, and I am the One who forgives all sins and I do not mind, so seek My forgiveness and I will forgive you. O My servants, all of you are hungry except the one whom I feed, so ask Me for food and I will feed you. O My servants, all of you are naked except the one whom I clothe, so ask Me for clothing and I will clothe you. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, your humans and your jinn, were (as pious) as the heart of the most God-fearing man among you, that would not add anything to My dominion. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, your humans and your jinn, were like the heart of the most wicked man among you, that would not decrease My dominion in the slightest. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, your humans and your jinn, gathered on a single plain and asked of Me, and I gave every person what he asked for, that would not decrease the treasures I possess even as much as the water of the sea is decreased when a needle is dipped into it and taken out. O My servants, it is only your deeds that I am preserving for you, so whoever finds good (in recompense), let him praise Allah Almighty, and whoever finds something other than that, let him blame no one but himself."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this wording.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the original manuscripts the word here is "a'taytu", whereas the context requires "fa-a'taytu" (with the fa'), so in light of "Sahih Muslim" we have corrected it and recorded "fa-a'taytu".

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Imam Muslim (2577) narrated it from Abu Bakr bin Ishaq al-Saghani, and Imam Ibn Hibban (619) by way of Humayd bin Zanjawayh; both of them report it from Abu Mushir 'Abd al-A'la bin Mushir, with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Hakim's inclusion of this narration as a supplement (istidrak) is an "oversight" (dhuhul) on his part (because it already exists in Sahih Muslim).
Reference / Source: Imam Muslim (2577) narrated it by way of Marwan bin Muhammad al-Dimashqi, from Sa'id bin 'Abd al-'Aziz, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 35/ (21420) and Imam Muslim (2577) narrated it by way of Abu Qilabah, from Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him). Also, Imam Ahmad (21367, 21369, 21540), Ibn Majah (4257) and al-Tirmidhi (2495) narrated it via 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ghanm, from Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him).
