Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7860

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The person who wept out of fear of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will not enter the Fire, until milk returns into the udder; and the dust of the path of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and the smoke of Hell can never gather together in the nostrils of a Muslim."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih and all its narrators are thiqah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narration of Ja'far bin Awn from al-Mas'udi (Abd al-Rahman bin Abd Allah) is from before his ikhtilat (deterioration of memory), and moreover it has corroboration.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn al-Mubarak (al-Jihad 30), and through him by Hannad (al-Zuhd 465), al-Tirmidhi (1633, 2311) and al-Nasa'i (4301); by al-Tayalisi (2565); and by Ahmad (16/ 10560) via Yazid bin Harun and Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Muqri'. Furthermore, Hannad (466) narrated it from Yunus bin Bukayr, Ibn Shahin (al-Targhib 224) via Umar bin Ali al-Muqaddami, al-Bayhaqi (al-Shu'ab 779) via Abd Allah al-Muqri', and al-Baghawi (Sharh al-Sunnah 4168) via Asim bin Ali; all seven of them transmitted it from al-Mas'udi with this same chain.
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi declared it "hasan sahih".
Note / Clarification: In Ibn al-Mubarak's book "al-Jihad" this narration is recorded in abridged form, with only its second part.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Waki', in "al-Zuhd" (23), contradicted the other narrators and narrated it from al-Mas'udi and Mis'ar bin Kidam as "mawquf" (a saying of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him)). The most likely view is that Waki' carried al-Mas'udi's marfu' narration over onto Mis'ar's mawquf narration, because Mis'ar's narration is itself mawquf, as a group narrated it from Mis'ar bin Kidam as mawquf: Waki', Muhammad bin Bishr (Ibn Abi Shaybah 13/ 351) and Ja'far bin Awn (al-Nasa'i 4300, al-Bayhaqi 780).
Important point: This disagreement does not harm the narration, because it is a matter that cannot be stated merely from personal opinion or ijtihad (so it has the ruling of a marfu' report).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sufyan bin Uyaynah contradicted the three narrators mentioned and narrated it from Mis'ar as "marfu'" (al-Humaydi 1122, Ibn Hibban 4607). In the narration of Ibn Majah (2774) the name of Mis'ar bin Kidam has dropped from the chain, which is apparently an error (wahm) of Ibn Majah's shaykh Ya'qub bin Humayd bin Kasib, since he is "layyin al-hadith" (a weak narrator).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abd Allah bin Dawud al-Khuraybi corroborated Sufyan bin Uyaynah in narrating it as marfu' (al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib 856), but in its chain is Muslim bin Isa al-Saffar, who is a "matruk" narrator, and his narration is not to be relied upon.
