Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7820

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the day Allah Almighty created the heavens and the earth, He created one hundred mercies; each mercy is as vast as the space between the earth and the heavens. Allah has distributed one of these mercies among all of creation; because of it a mother is tender towards her child, wild animals and birds drink water, and through it all creatures show mercy to one another. So when the Day of Resurrection comes, Allah Almighty will gather (even this one mercy) back to Himself and make it exclusive to the God-fearing, and He will increase it for them with ninety-odd more mercies."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it with this wording.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih li-ghayrihi (authentic due to supporting reports).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrators of this chain are thiqah, except that there is disagreement on Abu Uthman al-Nahdi (whose name is Abd al-Rahman bin Mall) and on those below him as to whether this narration is marfu' (a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) or mawquf (a saying of a Companion). Most narrators narrated it as mawquf; moreover, in the narration of Asim bin Sulayman al-Ahwal it is stated explicitly that Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) took this from the Torah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd Allah bin Uthman (known as Abdan) contradicted Musaddad bin Musarhad in narrating it as marfu'.
Reference / Source: According to al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (2/ 376), Abdan narrated it from Yazid bin Zuray' with this same chain as mawquf.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is also disagreement on Dawud bin Abi Hind, from Abu Uthman al-Nahdi, as to whether this narration is marfu' or mawquf.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: From Dawud bin Abi Hind, Abu Mu'awiyah al-Darir (Muhammad bin Khazim) narrated it as marfu', as found in
Reference / Source: Sahih Muslim (2753) and Sahih Ibn Hibban (6146).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Those who narrated it from him as mawquf include Abd al-Rahim bin Sulayman (
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah 1/ 182), Muhammad bin Abi Adi (
Reference / Source: Husayn al-Marwazi's additions to "Zuhd Ibn al-Mubarak", no. 1037), and Abd al-Wahhab bin Abd al-Majid al-Thaqafi (
Reference / Source: Tafsir al-Tabari 7/ 155).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sulayman bin Tarkhan al-Taymi also narrated it from Abu Uthman al-Nahdi, and among his students too there was disagreement as to whether it is marfu' or mawquf.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Those who narrated it from Sulayman al-Taymi as marfu' are: Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan (
Reference / Source: Musnad Ahmad 39/ 23720), Mu'adh bin Mu'adh and Mu'tamir bin Sulayman (
Reference / Source: Sahih Muslim 2753), Mu'tamir (alone) in al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (2/ 376), and Bishr bin al-Mufaddal, also in al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (2/ 376).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Those who narrated it from Sulayman al-Taymi as mawquf include Muhammad bin Abi Adi (
Reference / Source: Husayn al-Marwazi 1036) and Mu'tamir bin Sulayman (
Reference / Source: Husayn al-Marwazi 1020 and 1087).
Note / Clarification: Mu'tamir's narration in Husayn al-Marwazi's work is mawquf, whereas with other hadith scholars it is narrated as marfu'.
Details of the narration: A large group of narrators narrated it from Abu Uthman al-Nahdi as mawquf only, among them: Sa'id bin Iyas al-Jurayri (
Reference / Source: Zuhd Ibn al-Mubarak 894), Yazid bin Abi Salih Abu Habib al-Basri (
Reference / Source: Zuhd Waki' 503), Asim bin Sulayman al-Ahwal (
Reference / Source: Tafsir Abd al-Razzaq 1/ 203-204 and al-Tabari 7/ 155) and Ash'ath bin Abd Allah bin Jabir (
Reference / Source: al-Bukhari, al-Tarikh al-Kabir 2/ 376).
Important point: Only in the narration of Asim al-Ahwal do the words occur that Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "We find in the Torah" and then he mentioned the whole narration.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hajjaj bin Abi Zaynab narrated it from Abu Uthman al-Nahdi (
Reference / Source: the author's (al-Hakim's) earlier narration no. 187), and he made it a narration of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), although this Hajjaj is not that strong a narrator.
Grading: This hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is authentically established through other chains, as has passed at the earlier no. (186).

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word was corrupted to "bin".

Reference / Source: The details of all these routes have already been given under the earlier hadith no. (186).
