Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7802

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When a man is travelling through a barren, dangerous wilderness and he stops to rest in the shade of a tree, having with him his mount carrying his provisions and food, then he wakes from sleep and sees that his mount has gone; he climbs a high place (searching for it) but sees nothing, then climbs another high place and there too sees nothing; then he suddenly turns and sees his mount standing before him, dragging its reins. However intense his joy at finding that mount, Allah Almighty is far more joyful at the repentance of His servant when he turns back to Him."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: It is "sahih li-ghayrihi" on the basis of supporting reports.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is no harm in the narrators of this chain themselves; however, there is a difference on Hammad bin Salamah and on his teacher Simak bin Harb as to whether this narration is "marfu'" (as a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) or "mawquf" (as a saying of the Companion), and the correct view is that it is "mawquf".
Details of the narration: Al-Nadr bin Shumayl narrated it from Hammad bin Salamah as "marfu'", while in the narration of Bahz bin Asad, Hammad says: "I think it is from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." In contrast, al-Hasan bin Musa al-Ashyab, Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi and Musa bin Dawud al-Dabbi, all three of them, narrated it from Hammad bin Salamah as "mawquf" (as a saying of the Companion).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for Simak bin Harb, Abu al-Ahwas (Sallam bin Sulaym) and Hatim bin Abi Saghirah narrated it from him as "mawquf", whereas Sharik bin 'Abd Allah al-Nakha'i contradicted them and reported it from Simak as "marfu'", and Sharik had a poor memory (sayyi' al-hifz).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Darimi (hadith number 2894) and al-Bazzar in his "Musnad" (hadith number 2770) reported it via al-Nadr bin Shumayl, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: After this hadith Imam al-Bazzar said that we do not know of anyone other than al-Nadr bin Shumayl who narrated it with a full chain (musnad, i.e. marfu') to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from Hammad bin Salamah, from Simak bin Harb, from al-Nu'man bin Bashir, while others narrate it as "mawquf". However, Sharik narrated it from Simak as marfu'.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in "al-Musnad" (volume 30, hadith number 18408) via Bahz bin Asad, from Hammad bin Salamah. Bahz says that Hammad said: "I think it is from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)."
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi narrated it in his "Musnad" (hadith number 831), Imam Ahmad (hadith number 18408) via al-Hasan bin Musa al-Ashyab, and Ibrahim al-Harbi in "Gharib al-Hadith" (volume 3, page 942) via Musa bin Dawud al-Dabbi. All three of them (Abu Dawud, al-Hasan and Musa) report it from Hammad as "mawquf".
Details of the narration: Imam Ahmad (hadith number 18423) narrated it via Ahmad bin 'Abd al-Malik al-Harrani, from Sharik al-Nakha'i, from Simak, as "marfu'". Whereas Hannad bin al-Sari in "al-Zuhd" (hadith number 889) from Abu al-Ahwas Sallam bin Sulaym, and Imam Muslim (hadith number 2745) by way of Abu Yunus Hatim bin Abi Saghirah, narrated it from Simak as "mawquf". In Imam Muslim's narration there is the addition that Simak said: "Al-Sha'bi claimed that al-Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) attributed this hadith to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but as for me, I did not hear it (as marfu')." In contrast to them, Sharik al-Nakha'i narrated it as marfu', but he is not reliable because of his poor memory (sayyi' al-hifz).
