(There is no deity except Allah Almighty; He alone is the deity, He has no partner; to Him alone belongs the dominion and to Him alone belongs all praise; He gives life and He gives death, and He has power over all things)
(the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, says:) then in return for each time he recites them, Allah Almighty records ten good deeds for him, erases ten of his sins because of it, and raises him ten degrees because of it; these words become for him like freeing 10 slaves, and they become for him a means of safety from the beginning of the day until its end, provided he does not do on that day any deed that overpowers them. Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he had a store of dates from which the dates kept decreasing. One night he stood guard over it and saw a creature resembling a boy close to puberty. It greeted him with salam, and he returned its greeting and asked: What are you? A jinn or a human? It replied: A jinn. Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Give me your hand. It gave him its hand, and its hand was like a dog's paw and its hair was like a dog's hair. Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Is this how the jinn are created? It said: The jinn know that there is no one among them stronger than me. Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Why have you come? It replied: We were told that you love to give charity, so we came to take some of your food. Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What can save us (i.e. humans) from you (i.e. the jinn or devils)? It replied: "This verse which is in Surah al-Baqarah: Allah, there is no god except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining (i.e. Ayat al-Kursi). Whoever recites it in the evening will be protected from us until the morning, and whoever recites it in the morning will be protected from us until the evening." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says: Allah Almighty forgives that person whatever sin he has committed during that day, and if that person recites these words in the evening, Allah Almighty forgives that person his sins of that night."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Shaykh al-Islam al-Mizzi attributed this report in his book al-Atraf to the narration of Ibn Dasah from Imam Abu Dawud, and he also attributed it to Imam al-Tirmidhi. Likewise, he attributed the narration of Makhul from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) with this text to Imam Abu Dawud. When I examined this, the text of the report narrated by Makhul contains these words: "O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no god other than You." I did not find this report in the copy I have, so I feared that some error might have entered the report narrated by Muslim bin Ziyad, just as it had entered the report narrated by Makhul; so I recorded this report.
