Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Help me perform ablution!" I brought him water for ablution. He (peace and blessings be upon him) first cleaned himself after relieving himself (istinja), then put his hand into the soil, wiped it, and then washed it. Then, while performing ablution, he wiped over his leather socks. I said: O Messenger of Allah, will you not wash your feet? He said: When I put them (into the leather socks), they were both pure (that is, I was in a state of ablution).
Imam Ahmad recorded this report; its chain contains a narrator whose name has not been mentioned.

Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Salam, who narrated from al-Azraq bin Qays, and Yazid bin Harun narrated from him. If he is the son of Harb, then it is fine; otherwise, I do not know him.

He said: They are leather socks. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon you will have leather socks in abundance." The people said: O Messenger of Allah! What do you command us regarding ablution for prayer? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wipe over them" (the narrator is in doubt, or perhaps the words are:) "perform ablution over them."

He came to a pool of water, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) halted, so we also dismounted from our riding animals. The time of prayer came, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Bilal! Get up and call the adhan!" Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) went and urinated, then he came to the pool and washed his face and both arms. Then he reached for his leather socks; he was wearing two black leather socks, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was watching him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) called out to him in a loud voice and said: "O Bilal! Wipe over the leather socks and the head-covering!"

Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said (to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both)): Sa'd has a deeper understanding (of religious rulings) than you. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: O Sa'd! We do not deny that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped, but (the question is) whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped after Surah al-Ma'idah was revealed, for it made everything firm, and it is the last surah of the Qur'an to be revealed. Have you not considered this? The narrator says: Then no one said anything.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and Ibn Majah recorded a part of it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ubayd bin Ubaydah al-Tammar; Ibn Hibban mentioned him in the book "al-Thiqat" and stated: he narrates gharib (unusual) reports.

This was said by al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him).
