Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 1355

Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) came in, wearing leather socks. After accepting Islam, the first person I saw wearing leather socks was Sayyiduna al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him). People began to run their hands over them and ask: What is this? He said: They are leather socks. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon you will have leather socks in abundance." The people said: O Messenger of Allah! What do you command us regarding ablution for prayer? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wipe over them" (the narrator is in doubt, or perhaps the words are:) "perform ablution over them."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, al-Hasan bin Dinar, and he is matruk (abandoned).
