Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) mentioned wiping over the leather socks in the presence of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said (to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both)): Sa'd has a deeper understanding (of religious rulings) than you. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: O Sa'd! We do not deny that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped, but (the question is) whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped after Surah al-Ma'idah was revealed, for it made everything firm, and it is the last surah of the Qur'an to be revealed. Have you not considered this? The narrator says: Then no one said anything.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and Ibn Majah recorded a part of it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ubayd bin Ubaydah al-Tammar; Ibn Hibban mentioned him in the book "al-Thiqat" and stated: he narrates gharib (unusual) reports.
