The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at the man's face for a moment and then said: Hunger. The man went off running, or walking fast almost at a run, and came to his house. He searched his house for something to eat but found nothing. He went to the quarter of Banu Qurayzah and hired himself out to draw a bucket of water for one date each, until he had gathered a handful of dates. Then he returned with those dates, and he found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) still seated in the same gathering, not having risen. He placed the dates before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Please eat. There was nothing in my house that I could eat, nor was there anything in the house of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he could send to me. I went out towards the outskirts of Madinah. I came to a Jew in his orchard and peeped in through a gap in the wall. He said: O Bedouin! What do you want? Would you be interested in drawing a bucket of water for one date? I said: Alright, open the orchard gate for me. He opened the gate for me and I went in. I would draw a bucket and he would give me a date, until my palm was full. I said: This is enough for me. I ate them, then drank some water, then came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and sat with him in the mosque. He was there with a few of his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). Meanwhile Mus'ab bin Umayr appeared before us, wearing a cloak covered in patches, although in Makkah he had been the young man who lived in the greatest luxury and the most comfortable life. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, he remembered the luxuries he used to live in and what his condition was now, and tears flowed from the eyes of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he wept. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you better off today, or will you be (better off) at the time when a bowl of bread and meat will be brought to one of you in the morning and another bowl in the evening, when he will wear one garment in the morning and another in the evening, and you will hang curtains over your houses just as they are hung over the Ka'bah?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: For what reason have you come out of your house at this time? He said: O Messenger of Allah! For what reason have you come out at this time? He said: O Messenger of Allah! I too have come out for the same reason for which both of you have come out. Then he sat down with the two of them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began talking with them, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: Do you both have enough strength to go to this orchard? Something to eat and drink will be found there. We said: Alright, O Messenger of Allah! Then we set off until we came to the house of Sayyiduna Malik bin al-Tayyihan, Abu al-Haytham al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went ahead of us and sought permission from them to enter. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to turn back, the mother of Abu al-Haytham came running out and said: O Messenger of Allah! I had heard your greeting, but I wanted more greetings to come to us from you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked that woman: Where is Abu al-Haytham? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: These are the blessings about which you will be held to account. Then Sayyiduna Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him) got up and went towards a goat to slaughter it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not slaughter one that gives milk. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked that woman: Where is Abu Ayyub? The woman said: O Prophet of Allah! He will come to you right away. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned back. Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he was working in his date orchard at the time. He came running to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Welcome to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and those with you! He said: O Messenger of Allah! You do not usually come at this time. Then he took the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) back. Then he went to a cluster of dates and cut it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: What do you intend by this? He said: O Messenger of Allah! I want you to eat the different kinds of dates from it, and along with this I will slaughter an animal for you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you must slaughter, then do not slaughter an animal that gives milk. So he slaughtered a one-year-old young goat. He said to his wife: You bake the bread and I will prepare the stew, because you can bake bread better. Then he took half of the young goat and cooked it, and roasted the other half. When the food was ready, he placed it before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took (some) meat, placed it on a loaf of bread and then said: O Abu Ayyub! Take this to Fatimah, because she has not had food like this for several days. When they had eaten their fill, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bread, meat, busr, tamr and rutab (that is, different kinds of dates). Then tears flowed from his eyes, and then he said: These are among the blessings about which you will be held to account on the Day of Resurrection. The narrator says: This caused distress to his Companions. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you are granted something like this and you stretch out your hands, then say: "Bismillah wa barakatillah (In the name of Allah, seeking blessing, and with the blessing granted by Allah)." And when you have eaten your fill, say: "Alhamdu lillahi alladhi ashba'ana wa arwana wa an'ama wa afdal (All praise belongs to Allah, who has fed us to our fill, quenched our thirst, bestowed blessings and shown favour)." (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) This will then be its recompense. The narrator says: It was the habit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that whenever someone did him a kindness, he liked to repay him. He said to Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him): Come to us tomorrow. He did not hear this, so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is instructing you to come to him. When Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (the next day), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him a slave girl and said: O Abu Ayyub! Accept the advice to treat her well, for since she has been with us we have seen nothing but good in her. When Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) brought that slave girl home, he said: I find no better way to act on the advice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) than to set her free. So he set her free.
Al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Kaysan al-Marwazi; Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy) and others declared him da'if (weak); the rest of the narrators of this narration are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this hadith to me: "One night I missed my supper. I kept tossing and turning, but sleep would not come to me. I thought: If I were to go out to the mosque and offer whatever prayer is destined for me there, (it would be appropriate). I did so, and then sat leaning against a corner of the mosque. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came in. When he saw me he was surprised, and he asked: Who is this? I replied: Abu Bakr. He said: Why have you come out of your house at this time? I replied: Because of hunger. He said: I too have come out for the same reason for which you have come out. A little while later the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came in. When he saw our silhouettes he was surprised, and he asked: Who are these two? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) spoke before me and said: This is Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and this is Umar. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Why have you two come out of your houses at this time? We told him the situation, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I too have come out for the same reason for which you two have come out. Come with us to al-Waqifi." We came to (that man's) door and sought permission. The woman came out, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Where is so-and-so? The woman said: He has gone to fetch sweet water from the quarter of Banu Harithah. The woman opened the door and we went in. A little while later that man also came, carrying a full waterskin on his back. He hung the waterskin from a branch of a date palm, then came towards us and said: Welcome! No one's house has ever received better guests than my guests tonight. Then he brought a cluster of fresh dates, and we began picking out the dates in the moonlight and eating them. Then he took a knife and began going around among the goats. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Beware of the goat that gives milk (that is, do not slaughter it; here the narrator is in doubt about one word). He slaughtered a goat for us, skinned it and cooked it in a pot. He told the woman, and she kneaded dough and baked bread. Then the man brought tharid and meat, and we ate. Then he got up and went to the waterskin; its water had become cool because of the wind, and he gave it to us to drink. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: All praise belongs to Allah Almighty, who brought us out. We came out only because of hunger, but before going back we have been granted these things. These are among the blessings about which you will be held to account on the Day of Resurrection. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked al-Waqifi (that is, the host): Do you not have a servant who could do these tasks for you? He replied: No, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Keep watch! When the first captives come to us, come to me, and I will order a servant to be given to you. A short while later captives came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). That man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: What have you come for? He said: Because of the promise you made to me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Get up and choose one of them. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Please choose someone for me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Take this boy, and treat him well. The man came to his wife and told her what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said and what he had said to him. The woman said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has commanded you to do good to him, so do good to him. He asked: What good should I do? The woman said: Set him free. The man said: Then he is free for the pleasure of Allah Almighty. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Majah recorded a part of this narration, which concerns (the prohibition of) slaughtering a milk-giving goat.
Al-Tabarani recorded this narration, and Abu Ya'la recorded it in a more complete form than that. Its chain contains a narrator, Yahya bin Ubaydullah bin Mawhab, whom the majority declared da'if (weak), though he has also been declared trustworthy; the rest of the narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him) came to them and hung the waterskin on a date palm. Then he came to them, greeted them with salam and welcomed them. Then he went and picked fresh dates for them, brought them and placed them before them. Then Sayyiduna Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him) went towards his goats in a corner of the orchard to slaughter one of them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Do not (slaughter) a goat that gives milk. He took a goat, slaughtered it, skinned it, cut it into joints and then cooked it with water and salt. Then he went to his wife and asked her: Do you have anything? She replied: Yes! We have a little barley which I had kept aside. The two of them ground that barley, then the woman kneaded the dough and baked bread from it. Sayyiduna Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him) broke the bread into pieces and poured over it the meat he had cooked. Then he brought it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions, and they ate it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: O Abu al-Haytham! Do you not have a servant? He said: No! By the One who sent you with the truth, we do not have a servant. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you receive news that captives have come to us, come to us and we will give you a servant. Then some captives came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and at that time there were two slaves before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (here the narrator is in doubt about one word). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu al-Haytham! Choose one of these two (here the narrator is in doubt about one word). Sayyiduna Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Please choose for me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took great care, to the extent that he rolled up his sleeves, and said: O Abu al-Haytham! The one whose counsel is sought is entrusted. Take this one. When Sayyiduna Abu al-Haytham was about to go back with that slave, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu al-Haytham! Treat him well, for I have seen him offering prayer. Sayyiduna Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Alright, we will feed him what we eat ourselves, clothe him in what we wear ourselves, and not burden him with any work beyond his strength. Then Sayyiduna Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him) went home. His family were very happy because of that slave, and they said: All praise belongs to Allah Almighty, who has granted us a servant who will serve us and help us in our work. Sayyiduna Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has given me an instruction concerning him. Sayyiduna Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has given me an instruction concerning him. His wife said: Subhan Allah! Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) have given us a servant, and you want to deprive us of him? Sayyiduna Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him) said to that slave: You are free, for the pleasure of Allah.
