Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came out of his house; he had come out only because of hunger. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) also came out; he too had come out only because of hunger. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the two of them, and they told him the situation, that they had come out because of hunger. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Come with us to the house of Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan! The narrator says: He was a man from the Ansar whose name was Sayyiduna Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan. He was not at home; he had gone to fetch water. His wife welcomed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his two companions and spread something out for them, and they sat on it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked that woman: Where has Abu al-Haytham gone? The woman said: He has gone to fetch sweet water for us. A little while later the man came with a waterskin which had water in it. He went and hung the waterskin. He intended to slaughter a goat for them, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) expressed dislike for that, so he slaughtered a young goat. Then he brought clusters of dates. They ate the meat, ate different kinds of dates and drank water. Then one of the two (that is, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr or Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both)) asked: Are these among the blessings about which we will be held to account? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The believer will not be reproached for anything of this world that he uses; it is the disbeliever who will be reproached."
Al-Tabarani recorded this narration; its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin al-Sa'ib al-Kalbi, and he is kadhdhab (a liar).
