Sayyiduna Amir bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him), who had the honour of taking part in the Battle of Badr, narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us on a military expedition. (Sayyiduna Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) told the narrator:) O my son! At that time our only provision for the journey was a large bag of dates. We used to distribute it a handful each, until the time came when each of us received one date. The narrator says: I asked: O father! How could you manage with one date? He said: O my son! Do not say that; later, when we did not get even that, we realised its worth."
Ahmad, al-Bazzar, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded this narration; its chain contains a narrator, al-Mas'udi, who suffered from confusion (ikhtilat), and he is thiqah (trustworthy).
