Sayyiduna Athmah al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us, and a man from the Ansar met him. He said: O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be ransomed for you, the state I see in your face distresses me; what is the reason for it? The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at the man's face for a moment and then said: Hunger. The man went off running, or walking fast almost at a run, and came to his house. He searched his house for something to eat but found nothing. He went to the quarter of Banu Qurayzah and hired himself out to draw a bucket of water for one date each, until he had gathered a handful of dates. Then he returned with those dates, and he found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) still seated in the same gathering, not having risen. He placed the dates before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Please eat. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Where did you get these dates? He told him what had happened. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I think that you love Allah and His Messenger. He said: Yes! By the One who sent you with the truth, you are dearer to me than my own self, my children, my family and my wealth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If that is so, then be patient with poverty and be ready to face trial. By the One who sent me with the truth, these two come to the one who loves me faster than water flows from the top of a mountain to its foot."
Al-Tabarani recorded this narration, and its chain contains a group of narrators whom I do not know.
