Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) were on the hill of Safa. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: O Jibril! By the One who sent you with the truth, the household of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has neither a handful of flour nor a handful of barley. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had only just said this when a rumbling was heard from the sky, which alarmed him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Has Allah Almighty commanded the Hour to be established? Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) replied: No! But when Allah Almighty heard your words, He commanded Sayyiduna Israfil (peace be upon him), and he is descending towards you. Then Sayyiduna Israfil (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Allah Almighty has heard what you said, and He has sent me with the keys of the treasures of the earth, and He has commanded me to make you this offer: (if you wish,) I will turn the mountains of Tihamah into emerald, ruby, gold and silver and make them move along with you; I will do so. If you wish, become a king-prophet, and if you wish, become a servant-prophet. Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) gestured to him to adopt humility, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Rather, (I prefer to be) a "servant-prophet". He (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times.
Al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Sa'dan bin al-Walid, and I do not know him; the rest of the narrators of this narration are the narrators of the Sahih.
