Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One new moon would pass over the household of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then another new moon would come, and in that time no fire would be lit in their houses, neither for baking bread nor for cooking anything else. The people asked: O Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah! Then how did they get by? He replied: By means of the two black things, that is, dates and water; or else it was that they had Ansari neighbours, may Allah Almighty reward them with good, who had milch animals, and they would send some milk to them (that is, to the household of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)).
Ahmad recorded this narration and its chain is hasan (good); al-Bazzar also recorded it in the same way.
