Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and some of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat together after the passing of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). They discussed the greatest of the major sins, but they had no knowledge about it. They sent me to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) so that I could ask him about it, and he told me that the greatest of the major sins is drinking wine. I came back to those people and told them about it, but they did not accept it. All of them went together to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) told them this: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There was a king of the Children of Israel who seized a man and gave him the choice either to drink wine, or to kill a child, or to eat the flesh of a pig; if he did not accept this (that is, any one of them), they would kill him. So that man chose to drink wine, and when he had drunk the wine, he did not refrain from any deed that those people wanted him to do." (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) At that time the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this to us: "Whoever drinks it, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days. If that person dies in a state in which some of the wine is present in his bladder, Paradise will be forbidden to him; and if he dies within those forty days, he will die the death of the Days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah)."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When Allah Almighty sent Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) down to the earth, the angels said: 'O our Lord!' (It is mentioned in the Qur'an in these words:) 'Will You make one Your vicegerent on the earth who will cause corruption in it and shed blood, while we glorify Your praise and declare Your holiness?' The Lord said: 'I know what you do not know.' The angels said: 'O our Lord! We are more obedient to You than the children of Adam.' Allah Almighty said to the angels: 'Present two angels from among yourselves; the two of them will be sent down to the earth, then We shall see how they act.' They said: 'O our Lord! These are Harut and Marut.' The two of them were sent down to the earth, and Venus (al-Zuhrah) was fashioned for them in the form of a beautiful woman. The two of them came to that woman and expressed their desire to be intimate with her. The woman said: 'No! By Allah! Not until you utter a word of shirk' (until then I will not be intimate with you). They both said: 'No! By Allah! We will never associate anyone with Allah.' The woman left the two of them and went away; then she came back carrying a child. The two of them again expressed their desire to be intimate with her, and the woman said: 'No! By Allah! Not until you drink this wine' (until then I will not come near you). The two of them drank the wine and became intoxicated; they committed fornication with that woman and also killed the child. When the two of them came to their senses, the woman said: 'By Allah! You have not left out anything of what you had refused; you did those things while you were intoxicated.' Then those two angels were given the choice between the punishment of this world and the punishment of the Hereafter, and they chose the punishment of this world."

Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Isa bin Abi Isa al-Khayyat, and he is da'if (weak). Some hadiths about the price of wine have already passed in the chapter on buying and selling.

Khalid bin Yazid narrated from Thabit bin Zayd al-Khawlani that he came to Madinah and met Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). He asked him about wine, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I will tell you about wine. Once I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the mosque. He was sitting in the posture of ihtiba', and he undid his hubwah. Then he said: "Whoever has any wine with him, let him inform me about it." So people began coming to him; one of them was saying: I have a small water-skin of wine; another was saying: I have a large water-skin; someone was saying: I have a leather container; and whatever Allah willed that a person should have (those people informed him about it). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Gather it at such-and-such a place in the plain of al-Baqi', and then inform me." They did so and then informed him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and I got up with him. I was walking on his right side, and he was leaning on me. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) caught up with us, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of me and moved me to his left side, and put Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) in my place. Then Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) caught up with us, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) moved him to his left side. He walked between us until, on reaching the wine, he stopped. Then he said: Do you people recognise this? The people said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! This is wine. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have spoken the truth. Indeed, Allah Almighty has cursed wine, the one who presses it, the one who has it pressed, the one who drinks it, the one who serves it, the one who carries it, the one to whom it is carried, the one who sells it, the one who buys it, and the one who consumes its price (all of these people)." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a knife and said: Sharpen it! The people did so. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took it and began slitting (the skins) with it. The people said: There is benefit in these leather containers. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, but I am doing this to show anger for the sake of Allah Almighty, because of Allah Almighty's displeasure regarding it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. I do not know the narrator Khalid bin Yazid; the remaining narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy).
