Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Taymi narrates: Sayyiduna Qatadah bin al-Nu'man al-Zafari (may Allah be pleased with him) criticised Quraysh and spoke ill of them, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"O Qatadah! Do not revile Quraysh, for it may be that you will see men among them in comparison with whose deeds you will consider your own deeds insignificant, and in comparison with whose actions you will consider your own actions insignificant, and when you see them you will envy them. Were it not for the fear that Quraysh would become arrogant, I would have told them what standing they have with Allah Almighty."
Ahmad recorded it in both mursal and musnad form, and he referred the wording of the musnad version back to the mursal one; al-Bazzar recorded it likewise, and al-Tabarani recorded it in musnad form. The narrators of al-Bazzar in the musnad version are the narrators of the Sahih, and the narrators of Ahmad in both the mursal and the musnad versions are the narrators of the Sahih, except for the narrator Ja'far bin Abdullah bin Aslam, whose case is different - he is in Musnad Ahmad - and he is thiqah (trustworthy). There is a difference of opinion about some of al-Tabarani's narrators.

Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once I was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); this was when he had come back from Badr. A man from the Ansar said: "We faced only old women, like tethered camels, and we slaughtered them." The colour of the blessed face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) changed; it seemed as if pomegranate juice had been poured over it. Then he said: "O my nephew! Do not say that. They were the great men of Quraysh. Had you seen them in their gatherings in Makkah, you would have been overawed by them." The narrator says: By Allah! I came to Makkah and saw those people sitting in their gatherings by the Masjid al-Haram, and I could not even bring myself to greet them with salam, because of their awe. Then I remembered the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
"Had you seen them in their particular gatherings, you would have been overawed by them."
Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"O assembly of people! Love Quraysh, for whoever loves Quraysh loves me, and whoever hates Quraysh hates me. Indeed Allah Almighty has made my people beloved to me, so I will not hasten to take revenge on them, and I do not consider any blessing too much for them. O Allah! You made the first part of Quraysh taste punishment, so make the last part of them taste Your gifts. Behold! Allah Almighty knows what is in my heart - the love that is in my heart for my people - so Allah Almighty has made me pleased concerning them, and Allah Almighty said:
'And indeed it is a reminder for you and for your people, and soon you will be questioned.'
So Allah Almighty, in His Book, reserved the reminder and the honour for my people, and said:
'And warn your nearest kindred, and lower your wing to those of the believers who follow you.'
By this too my people are meant. So all praise belongs to Allah Almighty, who made the Siddiq from my people, made the martyr from my people, and made the leaders from my people. Indeed Allah Almighty turned the servants over, inside and out, and the best of the Arabs were Quraysh. They are the blessed tree about which Allah Almighty has said in His Book:
'The example of a good word is like a good tree, whose root is firm and whose branch is in the sky.'
By this Quraysh are meant. 'Its root is firm': the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says: this means the nobility of their origin; 'and its branch is in the sky': the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: this means the honour that Allah Almighty gave them through Islam, in that Allah Almighty guided them to Islam and made them its people.
Then Allah Almighty revealed about them a whole surah in His Book: (the saying of Allah Almighty:)
'For the familiarity of Quraysh - their familiarity with the journey of winter and summer - let them worship the Lord of this House, who has fed them against hunger and made them safe from fear.'"
Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I saw that whenever Quraysh were mentioned with good in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he would be pleased by it, until the signs of joy became visible on his face, and he would recite this verse:
"And indeed it is a reminder for you and for your people, and soon you will be questioned."

Abdullah bin Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrates: Once a year of drought overtook al-Nabighah of Banu Ja'dah. He came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was sitting in Madinah, and recited these verses:
"When you became our governor, you related to us (the ways of) Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and the one who had nothing found relief. You treated people with equality according to the truth, so they became upright, and the dark night turned into morning. Abu Layla has come to you, whom the darknesses - the darknesses of the night - have driven about; he is a sturdy camel crossing the wastelands, so that you may treat him well; the changes of the nights and the cruel age have cast him adrift."
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Easy, O Abu Layla! For with us poetry is the least of your means. As for the choicest of our wealth, it is for the family of al-Zubayr, and as for its best portions, Banu Asad and Tamim keep them from you. But you have two rights in the wealth of Allah Almighty: one right because you saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and one right because you share in Islam with the rest of the people of Islam." Then he gave orders concerning al-Nabighah, and he was taken into the house of livestock. He ordered for him seven young she-camels, provisions and horses, and loaded the mounts for him with wheat and dates. Al-Nabighah began hastily eating the plain grain, so Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Poor Abu Layla! Hardship has reached him severely." Sayyiduna al-Nabighah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I bear witness that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
'Whenever Quraysh govern and act with justice, are asked for mercy and show mercy, make a covenant and fulfil it, and make a promise and keep it, then I and the other prophets will be the forerunners of the thronging multitude.'"
