Sayyiduna Rifa'ah bin Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "Gather the people of your tribe for me." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gathered them near the house of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then went inside to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Shall I ask them to come in to you, or will you go out to them?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, I will go out to them." The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to them and said: "Is there anyone among you who is not one of you?" The people said: "Yes! Among us are our allies, and our brothers' sons (this is the word in the Arabic text, but perhaps the word here should have been 'sisters' sons'), and our mawali (freed clients)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Our allies are from us, our brothers' sons (or 'sisters' sons') are from us, and our mawali are from us. And you - do you not hear? 'Indeed its guardians are none but the God-fearing.' If you are such, then that is it; and if not, then take heed, lest on the Day of Resurrection people come with deeds and you come with burdens, and we turn away from you."
The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised both his hands and said: "O people! Indeed Quraysh are people of trustworthiness. Whoever seeks out pitfalls for them, Allah Almighty will throw him down on his nostrils." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and these words of the report are his. Ahmad recorded it in abridged form, and his words are: "Allah Almighty will throw him on his face into Hell."
Al-Tabarani recorded a report like that of al-Bazzar, and in one report he gave these words:
"Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: 'I have gathered my people for you.' When the Ansar learned of this, they said: 'Some revelation must have come down concerning Quraysh.' Then they too came, some listening and some watching to see what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say to them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out and stood among them." After this the narrator related a report like that of al-Bazzar with various chains. The narrators of Ahmad
and al-Bazzar, and the narrators of al-Tabarani's chain, are thiqat (trustworthy).
