Humayd bin Abd al-Rahman said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was among some people of Madinah. He came, removed the cloth from the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), kissed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and then said: "May my father and mother be ransomed for you! How pure you are in life and in death! By the Lord of the Ka'bah, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has passed away." After this the narrator mentioned the full hadith. The narrator said: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) set off, hurrying together, until they came to the Ansar. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began to speak, and he left out nothing that had been revealed in the Qur'an or that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had mentioned concerning them; Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned every such thing. The people said: You know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If the people were to walk in one valley and the Ansar in another valley, I would walk in the valley of the Ansar." (Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) O Sa'd! You know that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this, you too were present there at that time (he had said:) "Quraysh will be the custodians of this matter; the righteous among the people will follow their righteous, and the wicked among the people will follow their wicked." The narrator said: Then Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "You have spoken the truth. We will be the ministers and you will be the rulers."
Ahmad recorded it. The beginning portion of it is reported in the Sahih. Its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), except that the narrator Humayd bin Abd al-Rahman did not live in the time of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him).

The righteous of Quraysh will be the rulers of the righteous among the people, and the wicked of Quraysh will be the rulers of the wicked among the people. Everyone has a right, so give every one who has a right his due. If a mutilated Abyssinian slave, whose nose and ears have been cut off, is appointed as your ruler, then listen to him and obey, as long as he does not give any one of you the choice between keeping his Islam or being killed. When he gives a person the choice between keeping his Islam or being killed, then the man should stretch out his neck. May his mother lose him!
